The second lesson in the afternoon was English class. The English teacher was a very young woman surnamed Gu, named Gu Zichen, dressed very fashionably, with hair in the currently popular wavy curls, and she was very pretty too. As it was her first time teaching, and the first time many of the students were meeting her, Teacher Gu didn’t rush to start the lesson but instead interacted with the class for a while, asking which students had previously studied English.
Five students raised their hands, including Ruan Jiaojiao and her two friends, as well as Qi Weixin, with the last one being Yang Tao.
Although Ruan Jiaojiao wasn’t very familiar with Yang Tao, she could guess from her usual attire and food choices that Yang’s family must be well-off. Those small cakes from last time, because they were not widely available and were limited edition, cost one yuan each, unaffordable for most people, but Yang had given her one without a second thought, clearly indifferent to the cost of one yuan.
So, it didn’t surprise her that Yang had learned English.
As for Qi Weixin, her expression was rather colorful. She had had a tutor over the summer holiday and thought she would be the only one in class who had learned English, confident she would automatically become the English class representative. How could she have known there were so many others who had studied it, including Xiu Xi, the one who had snatched the class leader position from her?
Pursing her lips, she wished she could retract her raised hand right then and there.
Seeing that several students had raised their hands, Gu Zichen smiled, particularly surprised to see a special fair-skinned little girl in the middle, who was seated next to a boy with heterochromia. She even thought he might have foreign blood, which could explain his exposure to English.
She walked over to Xiu Xi and asked in astonishment, "Does this student’s parents happen to be foreigners?"
