Chapter 50: Personal Score
Anna blinked rapidly, her lashes fluttering in confusion as she tried to make sense of William’s cryptic words. He spoke to her in riddles, and her intoxicated mind was starting to protest, the frustration bubbling up inside her as she clenched her fists in an effort to suppress it.
Was this all just a game to him?
William’s gaze remained locked on her, mysterious and unreadable. He stayed silent, as though testing her, gauging what she would do if he continued to toy with her emotions. But that thrill he seemed to relish vanished almost instantly when a flicker of disappointment flashed in Anna’s eyes.
"Let’s just say I have a personal score to settle with your ex-husband," William said at last, the words almost slipping out on a breath. "Maybe one day, you’ll understand what it is."
"It doesn’t seem fair," Anna muttered, her body sinking into the softness of the bed as she slid down. She nestled her head against the pillow, her lids growing heavier with each passing second. The intoxication took over again, and no matter how hard she tried to fight it, her body seemed far too eager to succumb to sleep.
"What’s not fair?" William asked, his voice low as he shifted closer to her. He reached out, pulling her into his strong arms. She didn’t protest. In fact, she discarded the pillow and nestled her head against his chest, the warmth of his embrace more comforting than she had expected.
"I don’t think... this answers my question," Anna murmured, her voice barely audible as the last threads of consciousness began to slip away from her.
William let out a soft scoff, his large hand gently sweeping through her soft blonde hair. "Well, I could give you the long version of that answer, but I don’t think you’re in any state to remember it."
"Mhm," Anna hummed, her body going limp as she drifted deeper into the world of dreams, the rhythm of William’s heartbeat lulling her into a peaceful slumber.
