Chapter 176 – In Silence, There Is Longing
The room was silent, illuminated only by the soft glow of a crystal lantern hanging in the corner. Behind thick, deep purple curtains, the night’s shadows gently enveloped Sylvia’s chamber. On the large bed draped with thick linens, Sylvia sat cross-legged, staring blankly at the wall. Her new body still felt unfamiliar, yet her mind wandered far away, anchored on one name that continuously filled the space in her heart.
Sofia.
A figure always present in every step she took, in every plan and struggle. The Queen of Nocture who had long protected the city and now bore the heavy burden as her substitute while Sylvia journeyed to seek answers.
Sylvia let out a long sigh and slowly closed her eyes. She could feel Sofia’s presence in her mind the steadfast face with eyes full of determination and warmth, the gentle voice that calmed her, and the small smile that always ignited her spirit.
"How are you there, Sofia?" she whispered softly, her voice almost a prayer drifting through the night air. "Are you alright? Is Nocture still safe with you?"
Her hand reached for the blanket beside her, gently clutching the fabric. The longing pulsing in her chest was not just from the distance that separated them, but also from the weight and responsibility each now carried. She knew Sofia felt the same.
She opened her eyes and looked toward the large window facing the dark sky sprinkled with stars. The moon shone softly, casting a cool light that soothed her restless soul.
"We are both on different battlefields," Sylvia thought. "But our hearts aim for the same goal to protect the world we love."
She slowly rose from the bed and walked to the small table in the corner. There lay an unopened scroll of a map and several stacked notes. Sylvia carefully took the scroll and unrolled it, studying the lines and symbols that formed a complex depiction of the world that had become her stage.
She imagined Sofia standing atop a high fortress, overseeing Nocture’s defenses, leading the zombies with unwavering courage and resolve. Sofia was not only a leader but a beacon of hope amid the growing darkness.
Suddenly, Sylvia’s thoughts drifted to their last night together before her departure. They had talked at length about the future, the lurking dangers, and the promise to reunite.
"I must be strong for you, Sofia," Sylvia whispered. "And I want you to know... I always rely on your presence there. Don’t ever feel alone."
