Chapter 65.4
February 27th
The following morning.
Vee woke nearly half an hour before her scheduled alarm. Amara, asleep in her arms, quietly snored every few seconds as she peacefully slept. Here, once more alone in the sanctity of their apartment, she seemed so incredibly small. Not just because she had yet to reclaim her true form, but also because of Vee’s newfound self-image.
The world was sharper, colors were brighter, smells stronger. These feelings were nothing new, but in the past, she’d only experienced them by making an effort to connect with her magic. Now, such effort was no longer necessary. The strength of her Miracle thrummed both inside and beyond her, sharing as much power as it could without completely warping Vee into a being beyond human comprehension.
For a tiny fraction of a moment, she’d briefly experienced what such a life might look like. Flashes of past, present, and future, all existing side by side like some immaculate tapestry. Here, in the first moment of respite since her leap from the bell tower, she wondered if she’d briefly seen glimpses of how Zadkiel had once seen the world.
Probably not. Even if I were to fully merge with my Miracle, I’m still only an angel.
Amara grumbled in her sleep and repositioned, turning away from Vee. When combined with the boundless energy thrumming inside her, Vee decided it was time to get up.
She made her way to the kitchen, briefly casting her thoughts back to the events from last night. After diving off the bell tower to save Amara, she’d conjured the strength necessary to banish the heart of Nick’s lycanthropy. For whatever reason, either due to inherent limitations or simple inexperience, she unfortunately hadn’t removed the full influence of the curse from his body. Subsequent tests revealed that some traces of lycanthropy still lived inside him, but without the heart of the infection, those instincts were his to control. Further testing was necessary to understand the extent of the changes, but if nothing else, the magic of the full moon no longer turned him into a mindless beast.
In the hours after their encounter at the bell tower, Vee and the others scoured the campus in search of potential new members of the AV Club. Not only had Werewolf Nick sprinted across campus, but Vee’s self-actualization had been anything but quiet. The sudden restoration of a massive bell had no doubt drawn plenty of attention, not to mention the light show that had accompanied it.
Following a harrowing trek through The Wilds without her powers, and a malicious attack on the bell tower, Amara opted not to reclaim her true form until the morning. Her exhaustion was hardly a unique feeling—other than Vee, everyone was running on fumes following multiple all-nighters spent preparing a possible method of restraining Nick during full moons.
Vee wandered to her fridge and opened it, wondering what she might be able to make for breakfast, when she remembered just how much time had passed. After nearly a full month of wandering The Wilds, she expected most of the food in her fridge to be past its expiration date. With a heavy heart, she opened her garbage can and tossed out several handfuls of lunch meat, cheeses, and other small snacks.
Once she finished, she turned her attention to her cabinets. Unfortunately, the cereal she’d been hoping to find was practically empty; Amara had returned it to the pantry even though it only had a tiny handful of food left in it.
Sighing in frustration, she emptied the food into a bowl before tossing the box into the garbage as well. Before the lid closed, as her eyes lingered on the exaggerated corn flakes on the cover, an idea crossed her mind.
She placed the mostly empty bowl and a spoon on the breakfast counter, then walked around to the living room to give herself some space. Taking a calm, quiet breath, Vee reached out to her Miracle and once again asked for its power. Light filled the room, reflecting off the various windows and appliances, as her wings sprang into existence. Above her head, her halo spun and whirred with excitement. With the strength of her faith at her side, she turned her attention to the empty bowl and imagined the cereal she wanted to eat. After a quick flash of iridescent light, a generous helping of fresh cereal appeared in front of her.
Her wings retreated into her Miracle once again, as did her halo and the rest of her light. With a giddy laugh and a small skip, Vee moved to the counter and happily dug into her breakfast.
Half an hour later, the bedroom door opened once more and a very sleepy succubus followed in Vee’s footsteps, shuffling towards the kitchen as she yawned and rubbed her eyes. Unlike Vee, however, she was completely nude.
Every bit as gorgeous as ever, it was still readily apparent that her powers were sealed beneath Saoirse’s magic. Vee had expected her to spring out of bed with fresh enthusiasm for reclaiming her true form, but then again, Amara had never been a morning demon. Instead, she walked over to Vee and hugged her close, burying her face and her tangled auburn hair in Vee’s shoulder.
“Is there any of that cereal left?” Amara muttered sleepily.
Vee kissed Amara on the forehead. “There can be, love. Grab yourself a bowl.”
Obviously confused by Vee’s statement, Amara nevertheless happily grabbed herself an empty bowl before taking a seat at the counter. She then raised her eyebrows at Vee, as if daring her to fulfill her promise. With a simple snap of her fingers, Vee filled the bowl with a burst of Enochian light, which left a pile of cereal in its wake as it vanished.
“Holy shit, Vee. You can just do that now?” Amara took a bite of cereal to confirm its legitimacy, her eyes going wide in excitement. “That’s so fucking cool! Look at you, girl! You’ve got your wings and all your magic and everything! What’s it feel like?”
Pausing for a second, Vee found it difficult to put into words. “It’s… hard to say. My angelic abilities are powered by faith, so all I need to do is believe the bowl is full of cereal. Kind of. I’m sure it’s more complicated than that, but ultimately, part of the magic is that I don’t fully understand how it works. Speaking of wings, isn’t it time we got the real Amara back?”
Amara shuddered. “Ugh. I know what you mean, but can we avoid talking about which me is real? I kinda had my name stolen by a faerie for a little bit…”
Vee nearly choked on a bite of cereal. “I’m sorry, what?!”
“Look, it was a whole thing, but I’m all better now. I promise I’ll share the full story, but I really don’t want to think about it right now. I want to eat my magic angel cereal, drink some coffee, then bathe myself in hellfire and finally get my tail back.”
Sharing another kiss, the girls returned to their breakfast. They casually talked about last night, about some of the things they’d seen in The Wilds, and Vee shared the story of how she’d met both Zadkiel and Hope. Although Amara lamented the fact that she’d missed such an opportunity, she was still ecstatic that Vee had finally found angelic friends that she trusted.
In time, once breakfast had vanished and their mugs of coffee were empty, Amara ran to the center of the living room and happily exclaimed, “Alright! It’s fucking go time!”
In preparation, Vee manifested a large fireproof mat beneath Amara’s feet and prepared a veil of Enochian energy to try and absorb any potential damage. Knowing Amara, her excitement to get her true form back was going to be a bit more explosive than she intended.
With a final nod from Vee, Amara closed her eyes. She lowered her head slightly, taking a deep breath, and at first nothing happened. Several seconds passed in relative quiet as she shuffled side to side, concentrating on her breathing. The first change Vee noticed was Amara’s hair; its luster returned, the curls grew more vibrant, and flickers of hellfire sprang from the ends of her luscious locks. The flames spread to her eyes, which opened to reveal black sclera and vibrant, glowing irises.
Horns manifested in a burst of embers, the flames of which immediately traveled down Amara’s body. They eagerly caressed each of her ample curves, breathing life and strength back into her with each inch traveled. Massive, red wings with blackened spines reached towards the walls, their sharpened tips nearly puncturing the drywall in their excitement.
The flames condensed even tighter, pooling around Amara’s waist as she manifested her gorgeous red tail. The instant it appeared, Amara gasped and moaned in pleasure, feeding another wave of fire. This one spiraled around her body, lifting her briefly into the air as it caught her wings. The hellfire spun faster and faster, growing exponentially stronger just as Amara’s delighted twitches and moans grew more intense. Her powerful demonic aura sparked and recoiled as it touched Vee’s angelic protections, the interaction even seeming to drive Amara further into her ecstasy. Flickers of her signature purple flame ran one final lap around her body, clinging tightly to her sex, and her eyes rolled back in her head as she came.
“Oh, fuck!” Amara gasped, narrowly landing on her feet as she recovered from her spontaneous orgasm. “That was… wow. That was so fucking hot.”
Ecstatic to see her girlfriend back to normal, Vee chuckled to herself as she dismissed the various traces of her magic scattered around the apartment. “I didn’t hurt you, did I? I was trying to keep you from blowing up the apartment.”
With a devilish smile, Amara slowly walked closer, her naked body still on full display. “It was kinda hot, actually. I dare say it gave me some ideas on a few things we should try now that you’re in full control of your abilities. Have you ever played with bondage? You made a bunch of magic chains when you confronted Nick last night, and I desperately need to feed after so many days without my powers, so…” Finally closing the gap between them, Amara pushed her breasts against Vee’s body and wrapped her arms around her waist, pulling her in for a kiss.
As their tongues brushed against each other, Vee placed a hand on Amara’s chest and lightly pushed her back. “Amara, about that.”
Surprised, Amara pulled back. “Shoot, are you okay? I didn’t hurt you, did I?”
“No, it’s nothing like that,” Vee reached out to cradle Amara’s face in her hands. “I just… I had some time alone with my thoughts last night after you fell asleep, and again this morning. I was thinking about us, about everything talked about in Tadghán’s loft.”
Amara swallowed nervously. “…And?”
Vee hesitated, again trying to find the words that might shed light on her truth. “When I was younger, I thought I knew everything. I was an angel, I knew the divine truth of the universe, and all I had to do was play my part. I always imagined that I would probably meet a guy, start a family, and live out my days fighting demons in protection of the world. Then, when I was thirteen or so, I started having strange feelings about other girls in my class. I knew gay people existed, obviously, and I was super supportive of them, but I never thought I would be gay myself. I’m not exaggerating when I say it took years for me to accept my sexuality; not because I thought it was wrong, or because I thought my parents would disapprove, but because it just didn’t fit that image I’d conjured of my future. It… can sometimes take a while for me to redefine how I see myself.”
“I know the feeling,” Amara muttered, gently rubbing Vee’s arm.
“Then I started school here at Aurelius. I met you, Chloé, Tessa, and Nick, and it was great! I’m so happy that we’ve encouraged Chloé to accept herself and be more open, and in befriending her, I’ve grown confident that I’m not trans myself. Nick helped remind me that I was bisexual, even if we never ended up really dating. Through Tessa, I saw a true polyamorous relationship for the first time. She was happy, all her partners were on the same page, and no one was mad when Tessa inevitably slept with a bunch of random people she met at parties. I was really happy for her, and glad she figured out a life that made sense for her needs, but that was her life, not mine.” Vee laced her fingers through Amara’s before averting her gaze to the floor. “At least, that’s what I thought.”
“What exactly are you saying, Vee?” Amara asked.
Looking the love of her life in her eyes, Vee gently kissed her. “I love you more than anything, Amara, but you’re a succubus. You once told me you could easily have sex multiple times a day and still want more, whereas I find it incredibly easy to go days or weeks without it. You also love pushing yourself, trying new things and experimenting in bed, but there are some things I’m just not interested in. The more I think about it, the more I think I’d be happier if we could each approach sex on our own terms. When I’m in the mood, I know you will be too, but if I’m not… I’m comfortable trusting you to take care of those needs elsewhere. I want us both to be happy, and I don’t want to wake up in a year and realize that sex with you has turned into an obligation or something I resent.”
“So… you’re okay with me fucking other people?”
Vee smiled. “I think so, yeah. Now, obviously, sex is different than a relationship. If you feel like you’re catching feelings for someone else, that’s going to require a pretty serious talk. Of course, from what you’ve told me in the past, pretty much all the sex you’ve ever had has been casual.”
“Well, yeah,” Amara admitted. “I only started having sex, what, six months ago? It’s only ever been casual sex to keep myself fed, or the occasional bit of demonic trickery to get information.”
“That’s what I mean, Amara. We move through the world in fundamentally different ways, and I don’t want to stand in the way of that.” Leaning in for another kiss, Vee couldn’t help but notice a glimmer of excitement in Amara’s eyes. More than anything else, that spark assured Vee she was doing the right thing. “Now, how about you text Tessa and see if she’s still down bad for your tail. Heck, maybe she’ll want you two to double team Nick to celebrate last night.”
Giddy with excitement, Amara threw her arms around Vee and picked her up, spinning her around the living room. “Vee, you’re the best! I promise you won’t regret this!”
Laughing from both surprise and joy, Vee happily let Amara shower her with kisses before her feet found the floor again. “I know I won’t, Amara. I trust you.”
Amara stole one final kiss before running to the front door. Just before picking up her phone from the breakfast counter, she hopped into the air and quickly refreshed her appearance. Her demonic features vanished, and a comfortable winter outfit surrounded her body as her illusory mastery asserted itself once again. She opened the door, then turned to Vee again and silently mouthed “I love you,” several more times. When she disappeared into the hallway, Vee heard the start of her phone conversation.
“Tess! Girl! I hope you’re still in bed, ‘cuz I’m coming over!” she said excitedly. “Yes, I’m being serious!”
The door closed, and Vee gradually lost the conversation. Amara’s energy was infectious, and Vee continued smiling to herself as she retreated to the living room.
She never would have admitted to it, but she obviously loves this. I never should have doubted us.
With the apartment completely to herself, Vee cast her thoughts to the rest of the day. She had a feeling Amara would only need a few hours to finish up with Tessa, at which point they might be able to get lunch and spend the rest of the day together.
Huh.
My girlfriend is about to go fuck someone else. I thought this would feel weirder than it does.
Curious, Vee took a deep breath and called forth her full angelic form. Impossibly bright feathers as white as starlight sprang forth from her Miracle, sending countless cascades of brilliant iridescent light across the apartment. Once her wings took shape, she pulled them close to honestly examine them for the first time in her life.
Her first instinct was to lightly run her fingers across the feathers. They were softer than she ever would have imagined, and they gently glittered beneath the light of their own existence as Vee ruffled them.
Countless memories resurfaced of all the times she’d desperately prayed to her Patron, hoping for any sort of sign that she wasn’t a failure. How many times had she asked for her wings to manifest? Or for her halo to finally appear? Now, as her fingers traced the endless feathery edges of her wings, she giggled at how natural it felt to connect with this part of herself.
This is right.
I trust Amara, I trust myself.
I trust us.
Extending her wings once more, Vee looked towards the halo above her head. Its vibrant light felt almost like a reflection; its glow encouraging her to be at peace with who she was and who she wanted to be.
Vee closed her eyes, uttered a small prayer of thanks to no one in particular, and smiled.
