I Will Be the Greatest Knight

Chapter 228: Spring

They’re called the floodplains for a reason, Irene reminded herself as she sank into mud the moment she stepped outside of the tent.

Fortunately, they had been fortifying the sleeping tents with boards, canvas bags, firmly packed dirt—basically whatever they could possibly get their hands on in a place where deliveries were few and far between.

Actually, if Irene recalled correctly, they had even disassembled a wagon that came with a delivery in the name of blocking the flooding water from reaching the sleeping areas. Of course, Commander Lothian made sure to handsomely compensate the man who drove the wagon there in the first place.

Since there hadn’t been a massive wave of monsters recently, they used the time as wisely as possible.

It was late morning, her usual waking time since she, Leif, and Felix were all tasked with the first half of guarding either on the wall or in the field.

Since other apprentices had done breakfast already, she and the others were left with lunch duties and dinner duties.

The teenager was happy to leave the mud and step onto boards that hadn’t been completely sunken into the wet ground as she cooked. Again, the cooking area had become a strange respite, even though she hated it so much at first.

Warm hands, warm feet. She smiled faintly.

As she glanced to the side, she saw Leif step onto the boards as well, and he quickly glanced away from her, not wanting to interrupt whatever was making her smile.
