Chapter 88: Not Thinking
Arrows swished through the sky as Irene and Sir Sven did their best to aim at the ogres’ large yellow eyes that scanned the ground, looking for anything to use as a weapon. Without an intelligent thought in their heads, all they knew was to destroy the pests that dared swipe at their legs. A few times, the monsters even fell to their backside, hoping to crush the humans who attacked from below.
Fortunately, no humans had been crushed in that way quite yet. Irene hoped that it never happened because amongst the people trying to take on the monsters were the people she considered family even outside of her father who was also down there.
It was an overwhelming sight, wanting to keep an eye on Leif, Gunnar, and Felix as they all did their best to slash down the monsters.
However, the sheer size of the monsters made those below seem like mice trying to collapse a brick tower by removing crumbs of rock at a time. If she were less trained and less focused, she might consider the task at hand entirely impossible altogether.
Irene might laugh at the sight of an ogre with arrows sticking out of the side of its head as it turned left and right, searching the ground for whatever was making its knees and ankles hurt so unbelievably bad.
Each time the monsters hit the ground with their rock clubs, it felt like an earthquake even from up on the rocks where Sven and Irene were shooting arrows.
Soon enough, more backup arrived from the Duke’s Tower with more help.
Irene was surprised to see that the squires, their absolute last line of defense, had joined the battle.
"I will cover the squire, sir!" she shouted to Sir Sven.
