They kept walking down the quiet road, only the soft sound of the wind following them.
"She was a young woman back then," he began.
"The witch of a small mountain village. People there didn’t hate her or anything. Some were scared, sure, but others just thought she was odd. She had magic, but she never hurt anyone.
"One day, a man came from the city. He said he was traveling, but he stayed longer than he needed to.
He started visiting the witch every day. The two of them fell in love. At least... that’s what she believed."
Yu Holea frowned. "And it wasn’t real?"
Sun Weitao shook his head. "She thought it was. He told her things like, ’One day, I’ll marry you,’ and, ’Let’s run away to the city together.’ She trusted him with all her heart.
"But then... they got caught. A few villagers saw them together in the forest. They told the village head."
Yu Holea narrowed her eyes. "Let me guess. The village didn’t like that."
"No," he said. "But the worst part was the man’s friend. He came from the city too, and when he found out, he got scared. He told the villagers that the witch had bewitched his friend. Said she used dark magic to trap him in love.
"The city man didn’t deny it either. He got scared of being blamed, so he lied. He said, ’I don’t know how I ended up with her. She... she must’ve hypnotized me or something.’"
