Chu Wugao nodded reluctantly. "Alright," he said. "I’ll call her and ask her to come over."

He pulled out his phone and dialed her number. As they waited, the room grew tense, and the only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioner.

After a few rings, Wugao’s girlfriend picked up.

"Hey," Wugao said, trying to sound casual. "Can you come over? I need to talk to you about that talisman you gave me."

There was a pause, and then her voice came through, slightly hesitant. "Is something wrong?"

"Just come over," Wugao insisted. "It’s important."

After a few more moments, she agreed and hung up. Wugao set the phone down, his hands trembling slightly.
