Before she could react, the sound of heavy boots filled the air, growing louder with every second.
"Freeze!" a voice barked, sharp and commanding. The beam of a flashlight cut through the dim cell, landing directly on her.
Yu Mei’s heart dropped. She glanced at her hand, still holding the knife, and at Sicong’s lifeless body. It was obvious what this looked like.
"Drop the weapon! Now!" another officer shouted as more officers poured into the room, their guns drawn.
Yu Mei’s mind raced. Her invisibility power wouldn’t help her now; the room was already filled with officers, and she’d never make it past them. Slowly, she let the knife slip from her fingers, the metallic clatter echoing ominously.
"It’s not what it looks like," she said, her voice shaking but defiant.
One of the officers stepped forward, handcuffs in hand. "We’ll figure that out later. For now, you’re under arrest for the murder of Yu Sicong."
The cold steel of the handcuffs snapped around her wrists. Yu Mei flinched but didn’t resist.
As they led her out of the cell, she saw her subordinate standing at the end of the hallway. His face was pale, his eyes wide with fear.
"You..." she hissed, realization dawning on her. "You sold me out!"
The subordinate stepped back, shaking his head. "I-I didn’t have a choice! The police were on us! I had to save myself!"
