Chapter 47: No remorse
Sarah couldn’t stop looking at her phone. She kept watching the photo and a video clip that popped up later on that someone had posted on social media. It was short, maybe ten seconds, but it showed everything she needed to see.
Mason walking into the restaurant. The blonde woman beside him. They looked perfect together - like they belonged in the same world of expensive clothes and fancy places.
Sarah watched it again. And again. Each time, she noticed something new that made her chest hurt more.
Sarah’s mind started thinking about something that made her feel even worse. She did know that Mason was allergic to most people’s touch. He couldn’t handle it when strangers touched him. But he was fine with Sarah’s touch. And his grandmother’s touch. That was it.
So could this blonde woman touch him too? Was she not special after all?
The thought made her feel sick. She imagined this beautiful woman touching Mason’s face the way she had that morning. She imagined Mason letting her, maybe even liking it.
Sarah wished deep down that the woman wouldn’t touch Mason. She wished that Mason would push her away, that he would feel uncomfortable. But from the video, he looked completely relaxed and happy.
"I don’t care," Sarah whispered to herself, staring at the ceiling. "I don’t care about Mason or who he has dinner with."
But saying it didn’t make it true. The ache in her chest was getting worse, not better. She felt restless, like she couldn’t sit still. She kept thinking about Mason laughing with that woman, talking to her.
Sarah got up and walked to her closet. She didn’t know what she was doing, but she started looking through her clothes. She pulled out a simple black dress - nothing too fancy, but nice enough for an expensive restaurant. She added a light cardigan and some small earrings.
She looked at herself in the mirror. She looked good,.
