Shen Mei had been chatting in the living room until nine-thirty, yet the girl showed no signs of sleepiness and was urged by Shen Mei to hurry back to her room to sleep. Jiang An hesitated a little but complied and walked into Gao Chuan’s bedroom, which was empty at the time. She guessed that Gao Chuan was probably still in the study dealing with some matters, so she went into the bathroom to shower.
Unable to stop, Shen Mei finished urging at one place and then voluntarily carried a fruit tray into the study. Seeing Gao Chuan bent over his books, she smiled benevolently and considerately placed the fruits beside him, craning her neck to glance at the pages he was flipping through.
"It’s so late, why aren’t you sleeping yet?" Ms. Shen cut straight to the chase.
Gao Chuan, fully aware of her purpose for this visit, simply did not take her bait and replied lightly: "I’ll sleep after finishing reading."

"I know, Mom. Please go back and sleep yourself," Gao Chuan glanced at his watch, seeing it was only nine-thirty, and his tone carried a hint of impatience.
Shen Mei, who intended to keep the conversation light, suddenly frowned upon seeing Gao Chuan’s attitude and bluntly questioned: "Tell me the truth, have you and Jiang An been sleeping in separate rooms since your marriage?"
His heart skipped a beat, yet his expression remained unchanged.
As he had guessed, those few people last night must have gossiped in front of Shen Mei, prompting her sudden "investigation."
"Who told you that?" Gao Chuan countered, not looking for an excuse, but instead asking a question.
