Chapter 41 - 40 Why Are You Avoiding Me
The dusk clouds lingered, the wind and rain continued, dense fog drifted, and glimpses of light peeked through the mountains.
Led by an old woman, Gao Chuan entered an empty room, where thoughtfully she had prepared hot water for him to ward off the chill from the rain, advising him to take a warm bath. The man nodded slightly in thanks, bypassed the curtain to approach a tub filled with hot water, relaxed his guard, and gently shed the clothes from his upper body. The rising steam blurred his cheeks, and in a moment, both water and mist flooded into his dark pupils.
Under the orange glow of the lamp, the man’s robust figure cast a shadow on the nearby wall. When Jiang An, who had just brought clothes for Gao Chuan from the old woman, entered and saw this scene, she quickly shut her eyes and retreated shyly a few steps back, making a flustered noise: "Dr. Gao, here are your clothes."
Gao Chuan, who had yet to take off his pants, turned at the sound and saw Jiang An who had turned her head away, standing a few feet from him. He silently curved the corners of his mouth, a smile not reaching his eyes appeared, as if intentionally teasing the timid Jiang An, he spoke in a deep voice: "Bring them here."
Hearing him, Jiang An felt a "thump" in her heart. The phrase "Look not upon impropriety" echoed in her mind. The girl took a few more steps forward, intending to bypass the curtain and place the clothes aside directly, but Gao Chuan had already reached out his hand. Their arms touched and the girl recoiled as if electrocuted. Gao Chuan took the clothes, barely raised his eyes when the girl had already dashed out clumsily. Under the dim light, the man’s eyebrows knitted slightly, an unintentional tender smile seeped out.
Fleeing back to her room, Jiang An’s face still burned like fire. Thinking back to the broad shoulders and narrow waist that caught her eye, she couldn’t help but curl her lips, her thoughts drifting. She remembered that dream, its soft touch almost a matter of life and death.
After Gao Chuan finished bathing and changed clothes, entering Jiang An’s room, the girl had already lied down on the bed. Seeing Gao Chuan enter, she was slightly taken aback, then remembered that the old woman knew the two were husband and wife and naturally they should stay in the same room. Recalling their unpleasant shared bed experience at their grandmother’s house last time, Jiang An quietly suggested, "Should I make a bed on the floor?"
Fresh from the bath, the man still radiated a fragrance, maintaining an indifferent demeanor, he said, "Let’s just put up with it for one night."
Obediently nodding, Jiang An got out of bed to fetch another blanket from the wardrobe for Gao Chuan, climbed back on the bed, and re-laid another blanket. After arranging it, she was barely satisfied and called out to Gao Chuan, "Dr. Gao, it’s ready, come to sleep!"
