Queen Jiya recited a few spells, picked up the box containing hair from the low table, and slowly descended from the magic altar, approaching a vessel resembling an incense burner beneath the altar. Inside it burned a flame fueled by corpse oil.
Liaodan’s Great National Teacher Lei Da assisted her, helping her to take the hay out of a plate on the table, laying it flat on the table. The flames flickered, casting light upon the hay, which to their surprise started to move on the table.
Upon closer inspection, the hay had an odd shape, thick at one end and thin at the other, growing together, and it was these thick and thin leaves that were actually moving. They seemed to be trying to interlock with each other! After taking out the hay, Lei Da stepped back, while Queen Jiya continued her incantations in front of the furnace, chanting and gesturing wildly, ceaselessly throwing more items from a box beside her into the furnace.
Each time she threw something in, the flames surged higher, and her movements became more intense. She kept chanting, her mouth spewing the words in a frenzy akin to full-body convulsions. The pitch of the spells became higher, the sound weirder, and just as the color of the flames in the furnace turned bizarre, she grabbed the box, flinging it along with the strands of hair into the flames!
After the items were tossed in, the flames leaped up high. Jiya grabbed the hay that had knotted itself on the table and hurled it into the furnace fiercely. Within her furnace, a pile of things melted together, her incantations continued, her magic skills persisted, yet, something unbelievable happened.
The soul that was supposed to appear within the furnace didn’t come forth!
