Following behind Jiujin, Cai Wei had barely taken a few steps out of the door when she spotted a middle-aged woman approaching. This woman, wearing a bright red silk dress and a large red flower in her hair, swung her hips exaggeratedly as she walked.
Though Cai Wei did not know the woman, her ornate outfit and heavy makeup suggested her identity. Her round face was heavily powdered, her wide mouth painted a red, suggestive of a sausage. When she spoke or laughed, flakes of powder would fall, revealing a set of unevenly spaced yellow teeth. These features, all together, pointed to her being a traditional matchmaker of the ancient times.
As soon as the matchmaker saw Jiujin, she called out with a shrill voice, "Well, isn’t this Jiujin? Out to buy dim sum early in the morning, are you?" As she spoke, she moved towards Jiujin, bringing with her a strong scent of cheap perfumed powder.
Backing away a few steps, Jiujin distanced himself from the woman and forced a smile, "Good morning, Aunt Hu. I have to make a visit to the Nursing Homes and I am in a hurry. I won’t be able to catch up with you today."
With that, he put the pastries into the carriage, lifted the carriage curtain, and helped Cai Wei into the vehicle.
Matchmaker Hu waved her silk handkerchief and chuckled, "No problem, no problem. Go ahead. I can visit your mother later, it’s the same thing. Just remind her to keep some good wine warm for me..."
Jiujin remained silent, sat on the coach seat with a straight face, and drove away.
Matchmaker Hu made a "tch" sound, grumbled, "This boy thinks too highly of himself. Just wait until he finds out the match I’ve arranged for him, he’ll be overjoyed..."
The Nursing Homes were as clean and orderly as ever.
