The horse carriage moved slowly, so slow that it seemed like it was afraid of jostling the person inside. What was normally a half-hour journey took an entire hour. By the time they returned to the city, it was pitch black. Once the carriage stopped, Cai Wei was surprised to find that she had been brought to a grand inn and couldn’t help but exclaim: "Nangong Yi, what’s going on?"
Nangong Yi got out of the carriage, picked up Cai Wei, and headed towards the inn. While walking, he explained, "I’ve already sent someone to fetch your family. You can all stay here temporarily until you fully recover. And once you’re better, we can all return to the capital together."
Upon hearing his words, Cai Wei felt slightly uncomfortable. She had just managed to establish clear boundaries between them in Qingyun Town, but within a few days, everything got mixed up again.
She wanted to distance herself from him, but she had just been saved by him, and it didn’t seem right to push him away so soon. Furthermore, Saknu, being half-man and half-beast, was unpredictable. She was afraid he might cause trouble again. After much thought, she compromised and decided that it was safer to be with Nangong Yi and tacitly accepted his arrangement.
The inn was a three-compartment house, and Nangong Yi had rented the whole place.
The front of the inn was a storefront. In addition to accommodating guests, it also operated a small restaurant which was quite popular. The two compartments behind were guest rooms, eight in total. Nangong Yi and Manager Li took the main rooms in the second compartment, and Cai Wei’s family was arranged to stay in the backyard. Nangong Yi’s guards occupied the side rooms on both sides.
When Mu Zhongqing’s family arrived and saw Cai Wei safe and sound, they were overcome with gratitude towards Nangong Yi that words couldn’t express.
Ever since Cai Wei was taken away, their hearts felt as if they were being fried in oil – they were in inner turmoil and helpless. When they saw that Cai Wei was unharmed, everyone felt relieved. They surrounded Cai Wei, crying and laughing, asking her all sorts of questions.
Cai Wei didn’t want them to worry, so she didn’t mention how she had been beaten and injured. She simply told them that Nangong Yi had saved her in the nick of time. In order not to reveal too much and let her parents see her larger-than-usual buttocks, she made small talk with them for a while before going to bed early.
Their house had four rooms. Lady Du and her husband occupied the eastern room, Wen’er and Wu’er were in the next room, the third room served as a hall, and the fourth room was the bedroom for Cai Wei and Cai Fei.
