He was worried about resources, but now everything that contains even a small amount of spirit qi would become his resource.

Also, he was only able to absorb the spirit herb instantly because it was a Foundation Establishment spirit herb. If it were a higher level, the time taken would definitely be higher, just as refining higher-level spirit herbs takes longer in pill making.
The rate of absorption for the spirit stone was slower, but the amount of qi in the spirit stone was higher than the herbs, so it would be the most efficient resource for him to cultivate.
He had already decided that if he obtained non-elemental spirit herbs, he would sell them to earn spirit stones. And if he obtained elemental spirit herbs, then he would absorb them to increase his elemental affinities along with his cultivation realm.
