Chapter 173: You might want to hear this
The second those words left Evelyn’s lips, she was starting to regret being so impulsive and reckless in choosing to blurt out those very words despite the wave of satisfaction that had washed over her less than a second ago.
Natalie took in a sharp breath as she felt her heart sink to the pit of her stomach within the next second. Her mind was busy trying to register the words that just left her lips while James was sitting beside her in a daze, his mind too, was racing with thoughts and questions.
"Wait, I didn’t –" Evelyn tried to backtrack and take her words back but it was much too late. Natalie interrupted, cutting her off before she could even complete her sentence.
They locked eyes as tension brewed in the air between them, hanging in the air like a thick blanket.
It finally clicked inside of her head and realisation dawned upon her as the image of Aurelia’s bandaged arm popped into her head at that moment. "So it was you..." She muttered softly under her breath, still trying to come to terms with reality. "You tried to run her over? Have you lost your mind?!" She shouted, raising her voice this time as her words shook with anger and her eyes grew wide.
"I... I was just..." Evelyn stammered, struggling to find the right words to say.
"Eve," James began as he dragged his eyes over to look at her. "What have you done? Why would you do that?" He questioned, the words that left his lips were heavy and a look of disappointment was plastered across his face. This was the first time he didn’t jump to defend her immediately like he had always done. "I trusted you when you said it was an accident, I didn’t think that this is something you planned and did on purpose."
At this moment, Evelyn’s face darkened visibly as she clenched her jaws tightly. Without a single warning, she slammed both her hands onto the metal table in front of her, the loud banging sound echoing inside the small room. Anger flashed past her dark green eyes as rage spread inside of her like a wildfire she couldn’t seem to control.
"I knew it," she sneered, letting a scoff erupt from her throat as her eyes darted around. A bitter smile was lingering on her lips as the words left a sour taste in her mouth. "You only care about Aurelia now that you find out that she’s your real daughter! You don’t care about me anymore, you have changed!" She shouted, her voice cracking towards the end of the sentence as the words that left her lips were dripping with accusation.
Her eyes were filled with disdain not only for Aurelia but her parents too as she glared at them with an intense look swirling in the depths of her eyes.
A cold chuckle left Natalie’s parted lips. "You are right, Aurelia is our biological daughter, that is a fact that simply cannot be changed. But that doesn’t mean we don’t care about you or love you any less. I can’t believe you would do such a thing," she said with disbelief written all over her face as she kept her gaze steady. "How could you do that? How could you try and kill her, Evelyn?"
