Chapter 171: You came
Third Person POV
Evelyn’s blood chilled in her veins as her heart drummed against her chest loudly, threatening to burst out at any second now. She was staring ahead with a blank expression that masked her features as her mind struggled to register the situation.
"What’s... going on?" She stammered, muttering under her breath in a soft voice as her eyes darted around anxiously. "Why are the police here? Why are they looking for me?"
Slowly, Natalie turned her head around and her eyes landed on Evelyn’s dark green eyes that were filled with worry and panic.
"You were involved in a hit and run?" She asked, her voice came out shaky as she echoed the words of the officer and stared at her with disbelief written all over her face.
Evelyn’s eyes went wide this time when it finally clicked inside her head and the blurry memory of her zooming down the street popped into her head. "No!" She burst out yelling, her voice cracking. "I wasn’t! I didn’t do anything, I’m innocent!" She lied without even batting an eye as she proclaimed her innocence.
Natalie let out a breath she didn’t even know she was holding as she kept her gaze steady. "Then why did the police show up at our door demanding for you?" She questioned with a raised brow as emotions were running wild in the depths of her eyes. There was a brief pause as silence lapsed among them. "Tell me the truth, Evelyn..." Her voice trailed off but she never once tore her eyes away from Evelyn.
She then let the next few words roll off the tip of her tongue, her words were laced with a hint of doubt. "Were you or were you not involved in a hit and run accident?"
She watched as Evelyn gulped inaudibly, hesitating as she contemplated her next words. "I wasn’t," she finally said.
As soon as those words left her lips, the sound of the bell ringing echoed through the entire place once again, snapping them right back to reality, startling Evelyn who jumped a little.
"Hello Ma’am, we need your help to cooperate with us."
