Chapter 498: An End... And A Beginning
Ever so slowly, the world around me seemed to have picked up the pace. Adam’s arms trembled around me, his blood soaking into the fabric of my dress as he dropped to his knees. The bullet had gone clean through his body, and I could feel the heat of it as it buried into my left shoulder.
Eve had a really crappy shot for a woman as old as she was. Even without Adam jumping in to save the day, she wouldn’t have been able to kill me.
As Adam went to the ground, he refused to let go of me. Dragging me to the floor with him, he stared into my eyes. "I won’t let you die in front of me," he rasped again, coughing up a mouthful of blood. "I won’t ever let you go."
See, if one of the guys had said that, I would think it was the most romantic thing I had ever heard. TO hear Adam saying it? I wanted to scrub my body with acid.
Context is everything.
Behind us, the gun clattered to the floor. Eve gasped, her hands flying to her face like she couldn’t quite believe what she’d done. "Adam—Adam, I didn’t mean to—I didn’t mean—" Her legs gave out, and she scrambled toward him, sobbing until she could barely breathe.
"Oh gods," she choked, reaching out to touch him, but not knowing where to touch without hurting him. "Stay with me. Please. I didn’t mean to hit you. I was aiming for her." She looked around the room for a moment, her eyes so glazed over that she couldn’t see anyone but Eric.
"Cain, help me. Your father is dying, you have to help me save him!" she begged, her arms now reaching out toward Eric like he was the answer to her prayers.
"He’s not dying," I said flatly, done with the drama. My blood was starting to mix with Adam’s, and that was making me break out in hives.
