Chapter 389: Cute Little Pets
Leave it to the humans to think that the easy way out of everything, to keep the curtain up and everything perfect, was to kill the one who introduced reality into their lives.
The men stepped forward, acting like a physical shield between me and the malnourished villagers. However, the humans weren’t a threat, no matter how much they might have thought differently.
"Stay behind us," said Désiré, his voice soft and caring even as a bright flame lit up his hand. "Dey canna get through us."
"They don’t need to," I replied with a shrug. Pointing out the window, a bright smile appeared on my face. The jungle itself seemed to be holding its breath for some reason, and I could only guess it was because my new pets had finally found us.
Tank, lifting an eyebrow, walked over to where I was pointing and looked down. "I’m guessing you had something to do with that?" he chuckled softly.
"I was promised pets," I answered, refusing to give in. If I couldn’t have the dolphins, I was going to damn well get some raptors. They were so cute and cuddly, why couldn’t I have some and bring them back to O City with me?
Not to mention, they followed my blood to the village... that made them mine.
Slipping around Désiré, I joined Tank by the window. Below the tree branches and the rope bridges. Below the vines and the huts, the canopy floor was thick with shadows.
They seemed so alive that they were practically breathing, and I had to hold back my giggle as I saw the first pair of amber eyes.
One by one, they emerged from the underbrush, their long tails swaying behind them as their talons gleamed like knives in the half-light. They moved with slow, deliberate grace, not stalking their prey, but studying the village above like they were solving a puzzle.
And then one of them looked up.
