Chapter 367: Things That Cannot Be Said
"Woman," grunted Ronan as his eyes narrowed on my laughing face. "Laugh one more time ’n your ass is getting spanked."
I really couldn’t hold back the peels of laughter as he fought to keep his balance on the wobbling stilts. For every step he took forward, he stumbled back three. In fact, it had gotten so bad that the vines, who were originally trying to trip him up, were actually coming to his aid more often than not.
"Yeah, keep your laughin’, Princess," continued Ronan as he felt the vine wrapping around his leg and stilt. "If I fall ’n crack my head open, Imma gonna haunt you forever."
"Shh!" hissed Rhys as he glared at me. I was clinging to Daddy’s back as he walked forward on the sticks with all the confidence in the world. "If they hear us, they’ll attack," continued the man, his eyes darting around the dense jungle floor.
Originally, I had thought that they lived in the abandoned city, but I was surprised when they led us into the jungle. Then, I had just assumed that they were bringing us here to kill us. Since the plants would just eat the remains, it would save them a lot of work. But if you looked carefully, you could see well-worn paths for stilts.
"The city is too open," said Selene as if she was able to read my mind. "It’s where they first found us. Now they associate it with easy prey and go hunting there every night. Two years ago, we moved into the forest and set up an entire village in the trees. They keep us safe."
I had to raise an eyebrow at the confidence in her tone. If she really thought the plants were alive but not the trees, she had another thing coming. I could practically count their breaths. In fact, if I looked really closely, I could see a glowing network of roots hidden under the moss, intersecting with each other like a highway.
"Why?" I wondered out loud.
"Why what?" asked Selene, looking over her shoulder. To anyone else, they would assume that she was looking at me, but both Rhys and I knew that she was checking out Chang Xuefeng.
