Chapter 293: Threats and Promises
The guard opened the door at the top of the landing with a flourish to show us where we would be living for the next two weeks, and I have to admit, it wasn’t what I was thinking at all.
The room seemed to stretch on forever, easily the length of a football field or two, and it was lined with bunk beds on each side. There had to be over a thousand beds, each with a trunk in front of the bottom bed, and that was it.
Half of the beds didn’t have any blankets or pillows, while the other half seemed to have more than their share.
"You can pick any bunk you want," announced the guard as he waved us through the doorway. "If you have questions, you can ask one of the other probies."
"I have a question," I announced, my eyes never leaving the nightmare in front of me. It took me a couple of seconds to figure out which one of the numerous questions in my head was the most important one. "Where is the bathroom?"
"There is a single bathroom at the far end of the room," replied the guard, motioning in its general direction with the end of his gun. "Showers are communal on the second floor."
Spinning around, the guard disappeared before I could open my mouth to ask anything else.
"Well, he was delightful," murmured Eric as his eyes narrowed. "And here was me thinking that they would just give us a single room since we are married and everything."
"Welcome to the pit," announced a man as he strolled toward us. "I control this entire room. What I say goes, and if you have a problem with that..." his voice trailed off as the smile on his face brightened.
