Chapter 156: Where Are We Going?
Max stared at Dimitri as the rest of the guys around him remained silent, not one of them disagreeing with what that demon had said.
"Are you serious right now?" demanded Max, looking over to Luca to step in. Luca was the only one who could temper Dimitri’s temper, but even he was keeping his mouth shut. "After everything we’ve been through? All the foster homes, all the beatings, the starving... everything that we have always had each other backs for for the past 20 some odd years... and this is how it ends?!?"
"Not our decision," shrugged Luca, his voice cutting through Max’s heart like it was nothing. There was a long pause before Luca let out a long sigh, and Max felt a stirring of hope that maybe they would turn around, realize their mistakes, and go back to Réne and beg for forgiveness.
"De world ’as changed, little bro," chuckled Désiré. "Everyone is either gonna ’ave ta step up or step out. De choice is yours."
"So, just because I hate the feeling of blood on my hands, you are all writing me off??" demanded Max, his face turning pale at the knowledge that he has well and truly backed himself into a corner.
"De blood on our ’ands donna exactly wash off anymore," chucked Ronan, his eye half open. "It ain’t never washed off. It be way too late fer regrets, mon guy."
"Listen to me," sputtered Max, trying desperately from keeping his entire world from crashing down around him. "We all regroup and head back to Réne. Once we are back at the base, no one will remember that we were ever these monsters who burnt down everything around them. We’ll all forget everything, and everything will be all better... just like it was in the past."
There was a long stretch of silence as Dimitri and Luca shared a look. "There is no going back to someone who had turned their back on the best thing that had ever happened to him," said Luca, his voice calm and collected.
"Well, maybe that kid... woman... wasn’t what was best for him?" begged Max, trying to get everyone to see reason. And even if the other didn’t see it, as long as Luca did, then that would be enough to save his family.
