Chapter 122: In The Next Life
Tank nodded to the guard posted outside of the door to the basement. It had been more than a few days since he had last been here. Hopefully, those inside would be more willing to answer his questions.
"Good morning," he called out, his voice echoing around the empty. "Did you have a good vacation away from me?"
Last night he could have sworn that he had a dream about Hattie, but for the life of him, he couldn’t remember what it was. However, he knew that wherever she was, she was alive and able to see. That was enough for one of the many stones on his shoulders to lift.
In fact, he was so happy it took him a while to place that particular smell. "Ooh, when did Antoine pass away?" he asked, cocking his head to the side as he stopped in front of the hanging male.
Parts of his arms were practically black where his blood started to pool after death. They almost looked like a design, but that corpse was definitely now dead. It must have been somewhat recently, too, because Antoine hadn’t had a chance to turn yet.
"It looks like Christmas came early," he chuckled, pulling up his chair as he turned his attention to the pale Brittney. Even after all this time without food or water, she was still clinging to life. "Have you thought about what you want to say to me?"
Brittney lifted her head as if it weighed a hundred pounds. Her eyes were swollen shut from tears, but Tank had yet to lay a hand on her... and that gave her hope.
"I’m sorry," she croaked out. Her mouth was so dry that her tongue practically stuck to the roof of her mouth as she tried to speak. "I have no idea what happened to Dante’s wife."
"Dante’s wife?" scoffed Tank, leaning forward in his chair. Resting his elbows on his spread knees, he studied the woman in front of him. "Do you really think Hattie is Dante’s wife? Is that why you did what you did?"
