The plane took off from Hainan at ten in the morning. With a thirteen-hour time difference, they arrived in New York during the day. Their hotel was located in Chinatown, downtown, where there were many Chinese people with yellow skin, black eyes, and black hair.
In China, seeing people like this was commonplace and sometimes even irritating, but in a foreign land, it felt extraordinarily familiar.
