Knowledge is power, and ignorance is a crime.
Even if the judicial system in the medieval fantasy Toscana Empire is a mess, they do not kill someone simply for being ignorant.
However, if one is ignorant, there is no way to appeal even if something unjust happens.

Even more shockingly, until before the industrial revolution, around 1-2% of Europe’s population died from hunger every year...
