Chapter 31: What Remains After the Silence
The air hung heavy—like a burden not yet lifted.
The pressure was gone... but its echo lingered. The bodies on the ground hadn’t moved. Silence no longer brought peace. It was the sound of exhaustion, of survival edged too close to finality.
When the dust finally settled, Fade was still standing.
His eyes held the same depth—but now, within them, a flicker sparked. A momentary shimmer of empathy, fleeting but real. Something new. Or perhaps something long-buried, momentarily resurfacing.
He took a breath—but it didn’t ease the weight. It was like inhaling a storm that hadn’t yet passed.
His gaze passed slowly over each of them.
Zeyna’s fingers twitched first. Then Kaela’s eyelids fluttered. Darin coughed, the sound rough and dry, like gravel grinding in a hollow chest. Arven’s jaw was still clenched, but his chest rose again—breath had returned.
Fade spoke for the first time. His voice came deep, yet gentle—like a wave breaking against stone.
"Is everyone... alive?"
Zeyna was the first to try moving. She pushed up from her knees, though her left arm wouldn’t rise. Her teeth clenched. Her gaze found Fade—not with defiance, but with a quiet expression that simply said: I’m still here.
Darin groaned as he rose, gripping his shoulder. A few ribs must’ve cracked—his face twisted with each breath.
