Chapter 212
"Alright, keep trying then." Kevin said, giving up on convincing him. He picked up the basketball, ran to the hoop, and dunked it forcefully, making the hoop shake. The ball bounced off and rolled onto the road below.
"Hey, can you grab that ball for me?" Kevin shouted to a girl in a school uniform walking by.
She picked up the ball and tossed it back with a smile. "Nice dunk. Which class are you in? What’s your name?"
Kevin was momentarily stunned, noticing how pretty she was. She had short hair, long eyes, and was taller than Zoey Jackson, with a mature air about her. "I’m Kevin from Class 57. And you?"
"Oh, you’re in high school. No wonder I don’t know you." She smiled. "I’m Fiona Harris. I have to go now. Bye." She waved and walked away.
Kevin watched her graceful figure, intrigued. Unlike most girls, Fiona was confident and poised, with a hint of Mia Wilson’s aura.
"Isn’t that Fiona Harris?" Mike said, appearing beside Kevin. "You sure have a knack for meeting beauties."
"You know Fiona Harris?" Kevin asked, surprised by Mike’s knowledge of every girl at school.
"Of course. Fiona is the school’s goddess. She’s smart, and her father is the deputy county head." Mike said enviously. "She’s the real deal—beauty, brains, and background. I heard Ivan Simmons is chasing her. If you get her, you’ll really piss him off."
"Forget it. I’m not interested," Kevin said, knowing his limits. Girls like Fiona were out of reach for most boys. Her family’s status meant her relationships had to be well-matched. Harold Brooks might have a chance, but Kevin knew he’d be laughed at for trying. Besides, he already had Mia Wilson, and no one else could easily replace her.
Mike was just teasing. They returned to the court and continued playing. Meeting Fiona was just a brief distraction. After another half hour, they were sweaty and tired, and the sky was darkening. They left the school grounds.
"Remember to come to my house for lunch tomorrow." Mike reminded Kevin nervously. "My mom’s been nagging me. If you don’t come, I’ll be in trouble."
