Genesis Code: The Genetic Awakening

Chapter 158: Reconnaissance (2)

"Hah... I knew they wouldn’t stay put." Caleb shook his head. "At least they’re not going in without some cover." He ’watched’ as Jess and Crusher pulled out cheap cloaks to hide their appearance.

"Don’t attempt to use any magical senses..." he transmitted to Jess through his domain sense. "We’re close to energy territory. Be careful." Once he confirmed she’d received his message, he focused on the path ahead.

Landing on the open road, Caleb adjusted his posture and demeanour to match that of an average traveller, then began walking toward the village.

After several minutes and passing a few villagers working in the nearby fields, he reached the village gate—a simple wooden arch about three meters high and four meters wide.

His arrival drew attention. People nearby paused and whispered to one another, clearly wondering what a complete stranger was doing here.

Even without asking, the mood in the village told him enough: things weren’t good.

There was no laughter, no children playing—just tired-looking adults going about their tasks like lifeless husks.

’The place is even more desolate than I imagined,’ Caleb thought, scanning the village. ’Why are they still here? The leaders must realise something needs to be done, right?’

He couldn’t help but question what the village head and their superiors were thinking. A few possible answers crossed his mind.
