One Night Stand With My Ex's Uncle

Chapter 164: The Night Benedict Was Stolen

Logan’s POV

I launched after him without thinking, my body moving on pure adrenaline.

The cold night air hit my face as we burst through the hospital doors. The fake doctor was heading toward a black sedan with its engine running.

"Stop!" I shouted, lunging forward to grab his white coat.

I caught the fabric, yanking hard enough to throw us both off balance.

We crashed onto the freezing pavement, the impact knocking the wind from my lungs. In the struggle, I caught a glimpse of the tiny bundle being passed to someone in the waiting car.

"Give back that child!" I demanded, scrambling to my feet.

The sedan’s tires squealed against the asphalt as it peeled away, taking the infant with it. A wave of despair washed over mel’d failed to stop them.

Cold metal suddenly pressed against my abdomen, followed by searing pain that stole my breath. The fake doctor twisted the knife before yanking it out, his face contorted with rage.

"You should have minded your own business," he hissed before sprinting away.

Warm blood soaked through my shirt, the metallic scent rising to my nostrils.

Hospital staff rushed toward me, faces blurring as shock set in.

"Someone... took a baby," I gasped, clutching my wound. "Call security.

Check on the Shaw twins."

I staggered back into the hospital, ignoring the staff’s attempts to make me lie down. The elevator ride to Anna’s floor seemed endless, my consciousness fading in and out.

When the doors opened, Clayton stepped forward, his expression shifting from annoyance to shock as he took in my blood-soaked appearance.

"Mr. Porter, what happened-"

I pushed past him, leaving bloody handprints on his pristine suit. Anna’s door was just ahead, my only focus now.

She looked up as I stumbled in, her face instantly draining of color at the sight of blood.

"Logan? Oh my God-"

’The babies," I managed, my voice a ragged whisper. "Someone took... a baby. Check on... your twins."

Darkness crowded the edges of my vision, my legs finally giving way. The last thing I heard was Anna’s panicked scream for help as I collapsed onto the hospital floor.

Anna’s POV

Logan’s body hit the floor with a sickening thud, blood pooling beneath him on the pristine hospital tiles. The metallic scent of it filled my nostrils, making my stomach lurch violently.

"The babies," I gasped, clutching the edge of my bed as I tried to stand.

"Someone check on my babies!"

Clayton was already on his phone, barking orders while Betty rushed to my side, trying to stop me from moving. My C-section incision screamed in protest as I forced myself upright, but I barely registered the pain. Nothing mattered except my children.

"Shaw Estate security to the nursery, NOW," Clayton commanded into his phone. "Full lockdown protocol."

My phone rang. Rachel. My hand trembled so badly I almost dropped it.

"Boss," her voice was tight, controlled panic vibrating through each syllable.

"Benedict is gone."

The room tilted sideways. If Betty hadn’t caught me, I would have collapsed. My lungs refused to work properly, each breath coming in painful, shallow gasps.

"Logan was stabbed by the kidnapper," I managed, gripping the phone so hard my knuckles turned white.

"Check security footage immediately."

From the floor, Logan’s voice emerged, weak but determined. "Black sedan...

license plate... ARC-437..."

I relayed the information to Rachel, my voice breaking. "We need to find my son. Now."

Medical staff rushed in with a gurney, lifting Logan’s blood-soaked form. His eyes found mine, clouded with pain but burning with determination.

"I’m sorry," he whispered. "He was so small... I couldn’t..

"Don’t," I interrupted, throat constricting. "You risked everything for my son. Thank you."

Mom appeared at my side. "You need to stay here and rest."

I ignored her concern, pushing myself toward the door. "I need to see Sophia."

Betty supported me as we made our way to the nursery, every step sending jagged pain through my abdomen. The hallway seemed endless, my heartbeat pounding in my ears like tribal drums.

The nursery was chaos. Nurses huddled together, some openly weeping. Security guards were questioning staff. The sight sent a bolt of rage through me that temporarily drowned out my fear.

"How did this happen?" I demanded, my voice sharper than I’d intended.

"Weren’t you supposed to be watching them?"

Anna’s POV

The head nurse stepped forward, tear tracks staining her face. "Ms. Shaw, I’m so sorry. We took the babies for their bath, everything was normal. Both babies were quiet throughout."

"It’s chilly in the corridor between the bath area and nursery," she continued, voice trembling. "We always wrap them tightly before bringing them back. When we unwrapped Benedict, his eyes were closed. We thought he was sleeping."

"It wasn’t until Rachel came to check that we realized Benedict had been... switched." She gestured to another nurse holding an unfamiliar infant.

"We don’t know exactly when the substitution occurred."

I stepped closer to the strange baby, studying his features. Definitely not my son. Benedict’s chin was more pointed, his eye shape longer, his nose bridge higher.

’Take Sophia to my private room," I instructed Betty, no longer trusting the hospital security. My daughter’s tiny cries cut through the chaos, as if she sensed her twin’s absence. When I touched her cheek, she quieted immediately, her tiny fingers wrapping around mine.

In the security office, Rachel had already pulled up footage showing the car Logan described. Police officers crowded around the monitors, speaking into radios. Checkpoints were being established at every major exit from Skyview City.

The video showed Logan confronting a man in scrubs, the brief struggle, the baby being passed to someone in the car. Then the flash of a knife, Logan falling. My legs nearly gave out beneath me. Rachel’s arm steadied me immediately.

"Who would do this?" The detective asked, his face grim. "Any enemies?

Custody disputes?"

"It’s the Simpsons," I said without hesitation, rage crystalizing my thoughts. "George and Mary Simpson are behind this."

"It’s the Simpsons," I said without hesitation, rage crystallizing my thoughts. "George and Mary Simpson are behind this."

The detective wrote something in his notepad, his expression unreadable.

"Mrs. Shaw, we’ll investigate all possibilities. Is there anyone else who might want to harm you or your family?"

My face was ghostly pale, but my eyes burned with vengeful fire. My heart felt like it was caught in a vise grip of fear and fury. "No one else would dare touch my child. It has to be them."

I clenched my fists until my nails bit into my palms, the pain grounding me. If I had been more vigilant, if I had insisted on keeping the twins at my side at all times...

"We’ll bring in George and Mary Simpson for questioning," the detective said, his expression grave. "But Ms. Shaw, I need you to prepare yourself and keep your phone accessible at all times."

My heartbeat faltered. "What do you mean?"

"We can’t rule out the possibility that your son was kidnapped for ransom."

His words sliced through me like a dull blade. I tasted copper as I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from screaming.

"If it’s ransom, I’ll pay anything," I said immediately, my voice trembling.

"Any amount. Just find my son." In that moment, I would have signed away every penny of the Shaw fortune for Benedict’s safe return.

The detective nodded solemnly. "We understand. We’ll be in touch the moment we have any information. You should... try to rest. Let us handle the search."

The sympathy in his eyes only magnified my sense of helplessness and desperation, but I knew I had to stay strong-for Sophia, for Benedict.

Anna’s POV

I stood outside the operating room, feeling numb to my core. First Benedict’s kidnapping, I now Loga Fighting for his life after being stabbed while trying to save my son. Why did everyone who cared for me end up in danger? The question circled endlessly in my mind.

Doris Porter and Oscar had rushed to the hospital. Doris held Elizabeth in her arms, both women fighting back tears, afraid to add to my burden.

I stared blankly at the closed operating room doors, my thoughts scattered like broken glass. Oscar approached quietly, gently guiding my head to rest on his shoulder. I didn’t resist or cry— I just accepted the small comfort in this moment of overwhelming despair.

"Everything will be okay, Anna.

Everything will be okay," he whispered, his words like a distant flicker of light in darkness, though we both knew things were far from simple.

Oscar squeezed my hand. "I’m going to monitor the police search. I’ll let you know immediately if there’s any news." His decisiveness and compassion warmed my frozen heart, though I couldn’t show it.

William Murphy shuffled into the hospital corridor, supported by a nurse. His aged face added another layer of guilt to my already overwhelming burden. I shot Catherine an accusatory glance.

She looked defensive. "This is all Mary’s fault. The police just wanted to question her, and she made a huge scene and called Grandpa. If anything happens to William because of this, T’Il never forgive her. She’s getting more reckless with age."

I sighed inwardly, another worry piling onto my mountain of concerns.

William waved his hand dismissively.

"Don’t worry about me, Annie. You’ve just given birth-you need to take care of yourself. Phillip is personally overseeing the police investigation.

We’ll have news soon."

His words sparked a tiny flicker of warmth in me, quickly extinguished by harsh reality. I forced myself to analyze the situation coldly: "Whoever took Benedict, they’re targeting me.

Whether it’s money or something else they want, as long as they have demands, my baby should be safe for now."

But my heart still felt like it was being torn apart. Skyview City in November meant near-freezing temperatures at night. My baby was so tiny. If he got sick, hungry, or cried, would the kidnappers know how to care for a newborn? The thought twisted my insides like a knife.

Why did everyone I cared about always suffer? My soul tasted bitter as wormwood, but I refused to cry. I couldn’t cry. If I fell apart, what would happen to the Shaw family? To William? To Sophia?

Right now, I could only pray that the kidnappers would treat Benedict well, keep him warm and fed. I would give my life, the entire Shaw Corp, anything they asked—as long as my son was returned safely.

Catherine embraced me, whispering, The police have been to the Simpson house. Based on what they found, it doesn’t seem like Mary or Lucy are involved. You know Lucy-she’d actually want you and Uncle Marcus to build a family quickly. She wouldn’t harm your baby. And Mary can’t even show her face in public with those scratches."

I immediately asked, "What about George Simpson?" There was a hint of determination in my voice.

"Dad ran into him at a business meeting and tried to feel him out. The man’s sly as a fox-wouldn’t reveal anything. But Dad says that’s exactly why George is our prime suspect. The problem is, he has a perfect alibi. It’s all just suspicion at this point."

My mind raced, a plan forming. "If there’s suspicion, we need to confirm it." I felt resolve rising within me l would do whatever it took to find my son.

Catherine studied my face, her eyes brightening. "You have an idea, don’t you?"

"Find out where George Simpson is right now," I said firmly. "Is he at the Simpson mansion or at his secret estate in the west district?" My voice was calm and determined. I was ready to do whatever it took.
