Chapter 150: The End
Lionel’s heart got shredded to pieces. He says he loves her and here she is wanting for help from him and yet he... He couldn’t even help her.
Brie smiled and waved her hands. Although she couldn’t hide the disappointment from her eyes. "It’s okay. I just have another year or two left in the contract... so..." she scratched her head and walked back to the bar.
Lionel rubbed his forehead. She has three years left. She was sixteen when she signed the contract for twenty years. She’s thirty three.
"If you don’t want to do this you shouldn’t," he said.
Her hands holding the whiskey bottle shook and with a thud she placed the glass on the table.
Lionel bit his tongue. It’s not like she entered the contract because she wanted to. She thought she didn’t have a choice and she was coerced to sign the deal. And she’s been exploited all her adult life when she should have had fun.
Why didn’t she come to me? Why didn’t she wait for Leander? Why did she go to Evander for help?
"I could have helped you, Brie...You didn’t come to me. You went to him and his brother. I was there too... I was... Why?" Lionel couldn’t keep his deepest regret from her anymore and asked. He wanted to ask her why for years and yet he held back because he feared her answer.
He didn’t know why he had the courage to ask her today. She’s the one drinking and why is he the one acting drunk?
He waited for her to reply. He could only see her back and her messy bun. She poured herself another glass and drank that glass too without any break. And another glass. She tried to pout another glass but she swayed.
"Okay, that’s enough," Lionel rushed to her and got the bottle from her hand.
She leaned on his shoulder. "Nellie..." she whispered. "Oh, Nellie..." she sniffed as she slumped on his chest.
