Ning Guiwan almost reflexively stepped back two paces, her reluctance to get close to the man before her plain to see.
Quan Yu’s eyes darkened. Whether it was because he was backlit or not, his deep brown pupils seemed to turn pitch black. Though shaped like amorous peach blossoms, his eyes conveyed a chilling indifference that stirred no emotion in others.
Under his gaze, Ning Guiwan felt a chill seep through her. She pursed her lips, I should just turn around and leave, she thought—

But Quan Xiangru’s voice reached her first from behind. Ning Guiwan turned. Quan Xiangru stood about five meters away with Ning Qinghan behind him, both holding gifts. Ning Qinghan’s face showed a mixture of resentment and fear due to Quan Yu’s presence; she looked angry but dared not voice it.
"I heard early this morning that Grandma was hospitalized, so I came to see her. Is she doing okay?" Quan Xiangru’s words seemed directed at Quan Yu, but his eyes were fixed on Ning Guiwan. He had seen the scene just moments before: the couple by the window embracing, the man leaning down, the woman tilting her face up slightly. Their intimate pose, like that of lovers deep in passion, was silhouetted against the daylight, creating a strikingly beautiful image.
He couldn’t quite describe his feelings. His feet had moved unconsciously, drawing him closer. His throat felt tight, and his voice was very hoarse when he finally spoke. The past is still so vivid, often replaying in my dreams, he thought. How did two people who once planned their future together reach a point where they can’t even bear to be near each other?
Ning Guiwan met Quan Xiangru’s gaze, which was filled with a thousand emotions, but her own expression remained indifferent, showing none of the anger or sorrow one might expect when facing a faithless ex-lover.
Suddenly, her view darkened. She blinked, and her vision was filled by Quan Yu’s broad back.
