Chapter 91 Fate’s Cruelty.
“Ms. Romero appears to be unfit for artificial insemination. Through the series of test conducted on the IVF physicals, we were able to conclude that this situation was caused as a result of complications and high level of stress during her first pregnancy.” Doctor Bailey continued on, explaining to the three people present, all he and his team had learnt.
As he spoke, the sterile walls of the doctor’s office seemed to close in on Gabriel as he absorbed the weight of the revelation. The news of Leonica’s inability to conceive through IVF, a consequence of the stress during her first pregnancy, hit him like a ton of bricks and soon the feeling guilt bubble up in the pit of his stomach.
The guilt he felt was as a result of the nagging thought in his mind that if he had been there with Leonica during her first pregnancy, had he not thrown her out, divorced her all because of his pride and misunderstandings, then maybe, no, not maybe, he knew for a fact that the situation would have been different.
Leonica would have been in a good home, surrounded by the love of those she truly cared for and well taken care of. That would have left no room for complications and stress.
"Is there any other way to remedy this?” Leonica asked in a quiet tone. Her voice was almost breathless, as if the news had devastated her in some way. Just the thought of it having done so made Gabriel clench his fist and stroke a chord in his chest that tightened painfully as he couldn’t shake off the guilt that gnawed at him, knowing that this was a consequence of his past mistakes.
If Leonica noticed the look of regret on his face, then she did a good job at feigning indifference as she sat still and awaited Doctor Bailey’s answer.
The male seemed to take longer than usual to answer. After a few seconds of thinking, he sighed and shook his head. “No other artificial way, to my knowledge at least. But,”
Oh no, Leonica thought, knowing full well each time there was a ‘but’ or ‘however’ involved in a statement, it was never anything good.
Doctor Bailey had sensed her dread, but for the sake of Ashley’s life, he chooses to ignore it, continuing on. “As it stands, conceiving through sexual intercourse seems like the best choice.”
“What?” Leonica questioned, not because she needed Doctor Bailey to repeat his words or didn’t hear it, as a matter of fact, she heard it loud and clear, too clearly for her to believe and that’s why she needed a moment to make sure she had heard the right words.
Perhaps he meant to say something else and accidentally twisted his tongue. Yes, that must be it!
