Hex inspected the corpse of the Elder while going over the accounts he had.
’Are they like the Dawnbringers, causing a series of smaller incidents to create an opening for their end target?’
It was a possibility. But even if the Witchkin orchestrated everything, from being caught to being brought before an Elder to be judged, and used it as an opportunity to kill the Elder, how did they know the route they would take? Or that a few Serpents would be available?
’Perhaps they had only intended to be caught and be brought over. They anticipated that they would be stripped of their power.’
Hex stood in the middle of the battleground, pondering about the enemy’s goal.
They were waiting for reinforcements from the camp. Elize and Jonathan were not far from his position. The lifeless body of the Witckin’s leader was still on their opposite side. When Hex had taken a step toward her to inspect and study the body, Jonathan had stopped him.
"Leave it. Don’t touch it. With an Elder dying out here, the investigation will be very thorough. They will check even the remnant elements a person still has on their body, clothes, where not. They won’t leave anything unchecked, no matter how insignificant or trivial it may seem," Jonathan had said. To Hex’s surprise, even he, an Enlightened Knight, had seemed wary about the investigation about to ensue.
They were too busy bickering about something. Hex couldn’t hear a thing. One of them, most likely Jonathan, had sealed off their surroundings.
