Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 479 - 375 : What The Door Wasn’t Built For!!

The seam didn’t stop closing.

It also didn’t finish.

Kagetsu watched it hang there, a hair’s width from shut, gold light bleeding out of a gap too thin to fit a hand through anymore — and felt the wrongness before he understood it.

The older Kagetsu’s fingers were still locked around the detached hand’s wrist.

Neither of them had let go.

Kagetsu could feel that grip from two directions — from his own arm, where the wrist ended and the connection to it ran up through the mark, and from somewhere he had no business feeling anything at all, a phantom pressure on fingers that weren’t currently attached to him. He’d stopped trying to name that sensation three Chapters ago. It hadn’t gotten any less wrong since.

"That’s new," the older Kagetsu said, and for the first time since he’d crossed through, he didn’t sound certain of anything.

Behind him, the gold seam gave a small, tired shudder, like something exhaling through a gap too narrow to breathe through properly.

The light didn’t come from the seam this time.

It came from Kagetsu’s own wrist — the mark, the same one that had carried seven different voices through this arc, and it wasn’t pulsing anymore.

It was leaking.

Thin gold lines climbed up under his skin like something had been drawn there in ink and was only now deciding to bleed through. Not a burn. Not pain, exactly. Pressure, building behind a wall that hadn’t existed an hour ago.

"Kagetsu." Orochimaru’s voice, flat and controlled, the way it got right before he stopped asking questions and started acting. "Report."

"I don’t—" Kagetsu got that far before the lines reached his elbow.

Then his knees did.

Orochimaru caught him before he hit the floor, same as always, an arm hooked under his shoulder — and stopped cold, because the gold lines didn’t end at Kagetsu’s skin anymore. They’d found Orochimaru’s sleeve. Crawled up it. Not attacking. Reaching, the way a plant reaches for light it hasn’t seen yet.

Orochimaru let go on instinct and the lines kept going anyway, hanging in the air between them for a full second before they thinned out and died. He didn’t step back. He never stepped back. But his eyes tracked the space where the light had been like he was recalculating the entire shape of the threat in real time, and finding no clean edges on it anywhere.

"That reached for you specifically," he said. "Not for the nearest warm body. You."

"It’s not choosing," the older Kagetsu said. He hadn’t moved. His silver eyes had gone half-gold at the rims, same color creeping into a man who was supposed to have separated from all of this thirty-six Chapters ago. "You said no. It heard you. It’s not offering the same trade twice."

"Then what is it doing?" Minato had his kunai up, and for the first time all arc he looked like he genuinely didn’t know where to point it.

"Making room."

Kushina’s chains dropped another few degrees — not toward Black Zetsu, not toward Obito’s empty doorway. Toward Kagetsu.

"Making room for what?" she said.

The older Kagetsu’s jaw tightened.

"For both of us. At once. In one body." He said it like a man reading his own death certificate and finding the date wrong. "That’s not what finishing was supposed to mean. Finishing was supposed to be clean. One stays, one stops. You refused the clean version, so it’s trying the version nobody built."

"Can it do that?" Hiruzen, quiet, the counting-doors voice from two Chapters ago finally cracking into something with an edge on it again.

"I don’t know." The older Kagetsu almost laughed, and it came out wrong, thin. "I’ve been real for thirty-six Chapters and I’ve never once needed the door to improvise."

"Then it’s not asking," Kushina said. "It’s taking. That’s not room, that’s a raid."

Nobody answered her, because Kagetsu’s vision doubled before anyone got the chance.

Not the way it had with Kushina, back at the sixty-percent overlap — this was worse, because the second image wasn’t hers. It was his own face, seen from three feet to the left and about four inches higher, silver at the temples, a scar across the same cheekbone that hadn’t scarred yet on the body he was currently occupying. He could feel the floor under two sets of feet. He could feel the corridor’s air on two sets of skin, one of them thirty-six Chapters older and considerably more tired of standing in it.

He was looking at himself. From outside himself. While still fully inside himself.

"There you are," said a voice that wasn’t quite the older Kagetsu’s and wasn’t quite his own, layered underneath both of them at once. "I did wonder what refusal actually looked like from the inside."

The detached hand — still gripped, still gripping back — twitched.

For fifteen Chapters it had done nothing but hold on. Now the fingers flexed on their own, slow, testing a range of motion nobody had asked it to test.

"The hand’s reacting," Orochimaru said, already circling to get an angle that wasn’t between two active gold sources. "Kagetsu. Can you hear me. Are you still in there."

"I’m—" Kagetsu tried to find the edge of himself and couldn’t locate it cleanly. There was a version of "him" that remembered thirty-six Chapters of watching from the other side of a wall-seal that had never opened until three Chapters ago. There was a version that remembered none of that and had a body that currently hurt in a way none of it should. Both of those were true. Both of those were happening in the same skull. "I’m both. I think I’m both right now."

The older Kagetsu’s grip on the hand’s wrist went white-knuckled.

"That’s the part I need you to hear clearly," he said, "because it’s not going to stay stable long enough for me to say it twice. If the door finishes making room instead of finishing the split — you don’t get two of us walking around anymore. You get one. With everything. Both sets of memory, both sets of damage, permanently, no undo. I don’t disappear. I move in."

Kushina’s chains snapped fully taut.

"That’s not better than what you offered before."

"No," the older Kagetsu agreed. "It’s just what’s left on the table now that the clean version’s off it."

[Divergent Expression — Emergency Update]

Structural read now stabilizing around a single signature.

Match to Kagetsu (primary): 89%, climbing

Match to older Kagetsu: 84%, climbing

Both figures rising in tandem — first time this arc two competing matches have increased simultaneously rather than trading off.

Interpretation: convergence proceeding. Not separation. Merger.

Time to completion: unknown. Estimated: minutes, not Chapters.

---

The seam behind the older Kagetsu shuddered — not closing further, not reopening, just shaking in place, like a door caught between two people pulling on opposite sides of the same handle.

"If it finishes," Hiruzen said slowly, working through it out loud the way he’d started doing two Chapters ago and never quite stopped, "does the seam matter anymore? If there’s no one left to walk back through it—"

"There’s still Black Zetsu on the other side of it," Danzo said. First words out of him in two Chapters, flat as ever. "And whatever else Obito’s door was holding shut that we haven’t met yet."

Nobody had an answer for that, and nobody got the chance to look for one.

Kagetsu’s body arched, gold light finally breaking the surface at his sternum in a hairline crack that hadn’t been there a breath ago — the exact shape, the exact color, the exact wrongness of the crack that had been slowly killing the split-faced figure since Chapter 354.

The figure, still silent, still gripping the hand from the other end, made a sound none of them had heard from it before.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"That’s mine," it said, staring at Kagetsu’s chest like it was looking in a mirror thirty-six Chapters too late to matter. Its own crack pulsed once, in time with his, an echo it clearly hadn’t chosen to make. "That’s — that’s what mine looked like. Before it went bad. Before it stopped closing right."

The older Kagetsu’s head snapped toward it, grip still locked on the hand’s wrist, silver eyes gone almost entirely gold now at the rims.

"Say that again."

"It’s the same crack," the figure said, and for once it wasn’t pleading, wasn’t begging anyone to stop. It sounded almost calm, the calm of someone finally looking directly at the thing they’d spent fifteen years flinching from. "Mine didn’t heal wrong on its own. Something made it match this. Something’s been making all of ours match, this whole time, and I don’t think it was Obito, and I don’t think it was Black Zetsu, and I don’t—"

But Kagetsu didn’t hear the rest of it, if there was a rest of it.

The gold in his chest split wide, silent and total, and the last thing he registered clearly — before both sets of memory folded into each other and the floor came up to meet him from two directions at once — was the older Kagetsu’s voice, no longer arguing, no longer explaining, just naming the thing plainly for what it now was.

"It’s not finishing the split."

"It’s finishing us."
