Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 449 345 : Parity!!

[Divergent Expression — Signature Update]

Kagetsu/Kushina overlap: 20% → 24% → 29%

Rate: non-linear, accelerating

Decoy overlay (Ch. 338): holding steady at 60%

Projected parity: under six minutes

Recommendation: none available

---

Orochimaru's blade passed through the doorway-thing for the ninth time.

No resistance. No sound. Just the sensation of cutting warm air that happened to be shaped like a threat.

He landed, reset his stance, and didn't bother swinging again.

"Conventional weapons confirmed useless," he said, mostly to himself. "Again."

The doorway-thing didn't answer. It never did. It just drifted a half-step closer, patient in a way nothing patient should be.

Orochimaru had counted forty-one copies still circling the far end of the corridor, drifting on their half-second delay, none of them engaging. He'd stopped finding that reassuring three chapters ago. A predator that isn't attacking yet is still deciding, and he'd rather it decided while he was watching than while his back was turned.

He risked a glance toward the others. Kushina hadn't moved. Minato hadn't moved from over her. Kagetsu was standing where he'd been standing for two minutes, staring at nothing, which was somehow worse than if he'd fallen.

"Report," Orochimaru said, without turning fully around. "Numbers, Kagetsu. I need numbers, not a description of how it feels."

---

Kagetsu's own hands weren't fully his anymore.

He knew that in the abstract way you know a limb has fallen asleep — a fact reported to him rather than felt directly. What he felt, more and more, was someone else's knees on cold stone floor. Someone else's arms, too heavy to lift. Someone else's fear, running quiet and controlled underneath a wall of trained composure, because that was what Kushina did with fear. She organized it.

"Twenty-four percent," he said out loud, because someone had to keep saying the numbers, and right now he was the only one who could still feel both sides of them. "Climbing."

Minato didn't look away from Kushina's face. "How fast."

"Faster than last time you asked."

That got him a look — not anger, something worse. The particular stillness of a man doing math he didn't want to finish.

---

The figure said nothing.

It hadn't said anything since Kagetsu had watched it fail to answer the vessel's accusation two chapters of silence ago, and the not-answering had a weight all its own now, pressing through the mark like a held breath.

Kagetsu could feel it there. Present. Listening. Doing nothing.

You could talk, he thought at it, not sure if thinking counted as asking. Any time now.

Nothing.

---

The first involuntary movement happened at twenty-nine percent.

Kagetsu's right hand rose on its own, fingers folding into a seal shape he didn't know and had never been taught. Ram. Then something adjacent to Boar, but wrong, like his hand was reaching for a shape his own body had never learned.

"Kagetsu—" Orochimaru started.

"Not me." His voice came out flat, reporting rather than panicking, because panicking was a luxury that required his hands to still be entirely his own. "That's her. That's Kushina's seal-craft. My hand's doing it."

Across the corridor, Kushina's own hands — still slack in her lap, still not answering to her — twitched in the exact same shape, half a second behind his.

The colony flagged it before anyone had to say it out loud.

[Divergent Expression — Alert]

Motor pattern cross-bleed detected.

Origin: unclear. Kagetsu's hand moved first.

Kushina's hand replicated the motion 0.6 seconds later.

Direction of transfer: previously assumed one-way (Kushina → Kagetsu).

This reading contradicts that assumption.

---

"It's not one-way anymore," Kagetsu said, and heard how strange it sounded to say it while his own fingers kept moving through seals he'd never studied. "Or it never was, and we only noticed the half where I was the one losing something."

Minato's hand tightened on Kushina's shoulder. "Can you stop it?"

"I can't stop my own hand, Minato."

That silence lasted longer than the last one.

---

Orochimaru broke it by doing the only thing left to try — turning fully away from the doorway-thing, putting his back to an enemy his weapons couldn't touch, and closing the distance to Kagetsu instead.

"Show me the seal shape. Exactly."

Kagetsu held his hand still long enough for Orochimaru to see it, then let it move again, because holding it still took an effort that was getting harder by the second.

Orochimaru's eyes narrowed. Not recognition. Something colder.

"That's not from her training. That's improvised. She's building something in real time and your hand is drafting it before she finishes the thought."

"Building what?"

"I don't know yet." A pause, clipped and precise. "Neither does she, probably. That's what building something in real time means."

---

Thirty-eight percent.

Kagetsu's vision flickered — not doubled this time, but swapped, whole seconds at a stretch, his own sight going dark while Kushina's opened behind his eyes instead. In those seconds he wasn't watching the corridor. He was watching Minato's face from three feet lower than his own height, seeing the exact shape of the fear Minato was trying not to show her, close enough to catalog every place it was failing.

Then his own eyes again. Then hers. No warning between switches.

"I'm losing the corridor," he said, and his voice cracked on the second half of the sentence in a way that wasn't entirely his to control either. "I keep seeing you instead of him. Minato — I keep seeing you being scared instead of the doorway-thing."

"Then don't look at me," Minato said, low, and it wasn't unkind. It was the only useful thing left to offer.

---

The mark on Kagetsu's arm went gold at forty-four percent.

Not the maroon of the Ch. 338 overlay, still sitting there unchanged and untouched at sixty. Gold, the way it had flared once before when the decoy first went active — except this time nothing about it read like a request for permission. It read like two separate systems finally noticing they were standing in the same house.

[Divergent Expression — Alert]

Decoy overlay (60%, static since Ch. 338) and involuntary overlap (44%, rising) have made first confirmed contact.

Interaction type: unknown.

Recommendation: none available. Repeat: none available.

The figure moved for the first time in two chapters of silence — not toward the group, but toward Kagetsu specifically, close enough that its shadow crossed his without either of them touching.

It didn't speak. But Kagetsu felt something through the mark that wasn't words at all. Closer to a flinch. The kind of reaction a person has when they see a mistake they made a long time ago come due exactly on schedule.

You knew this would happen, Kagetsu thought, and this time he was sure it counted as asking. This is the thing you wouldn't answer about. Isn't it.

Still nothing. But the flinch didn't go away either.

---

Fifty-one percent.

Orochimaru had given up on the doorway-thing entirely now, standing between it and the others with a kunai he already knew wouldn't work, because standing there was still worth something even if the weapon wasn't.

The doorway-thing hadn't advanced. It didn't need to. It was watching Kagetsu with the specific patience of something that already knew how this part ended.

"Fifty-one," Kagetsu said. His own voice, still, barely. "It's not slowing down. It's not even close to slowing down."

He could feel the shape of it now, the way you can feel a held breath about to break — not pain, nothing so simple as pain, but a kind of crowding, two rooms trying to occupy one set of walls. Somewhere underneath it, distant and organized even now, he could feel Kushina doing the only thing left available to her: not fighting the overlap head-on, because she'd already tried that and it hadn't held, but cataloging it, the way she'd catalog anything else that wouldn't obey her — pace, direction, the exact percentage at which her own hand had first started answering to someone who wasn't her. She was still in there. She was still working the problem. That was the only piece of good news left in the corridor, and Kagetsu held onto it with everything his half of their shared attention had left.

"Talk to me," Minato said, and Kagetsu couldn't tell anymore which of them he meant it for.

Kushina's lips moved. No sound came out. But her eyes — open the entire time, aware the entire time, exactly as Kagetsu had insisted since the start — finally tracked sideways, off Minato's face, off the ceiling she'd been fixed on for two chapters.

She was looking at the mark.

---

Sixty percent.

Parity.

The number didn't announce itself with any sound. No alarm, no colony warning loud enough to match what it meant. Just a bracketed line that appeared and sat there, plain as a diagnosis:

[Divergent Expression — Status]

Involuntary overlap: 60%.

Decoy overlay: 60%.

Parity reached.

Dominant signature: recalculating.

Recalculating.

Recalculating.

Kagetsu's vision didn't flicker this time. It just went. Entirely. Not dark — replaced, the way a word gets replaced mid-sentence by a better one, so completely that afterward you can't remember what you meant to say first.

He was looking through Kushina's eyes, and this time it didn't switch back.

She was looking at the mark on his arm.

Then, without moving her head, without Minato's hand on her shoulder registering as anything but distant pressure, she looked past it — past Kagetsu entirely — at the vessel, still standing exactly where it had been standing since the chapter began, patient, gentle, apologetic.

And her mouth moved.

It wasn't her voice that came out.

It wasn't Kagetsu's either.

Minato heard it and went white in a way nothing in this corridor had managed to make him go white before. Orochimaru's kunai hit the floor.

"There," the voice said, warm and terrible and entirely unfamiliar, out of Kushina Uzumaki's own mouth. "Now we're all here."
