Naruto: Dream System

Chapter 98 - 98: Danzo, I want the command of the Root Organization

The silence in the underground chamber was oppressive, broken only by the faint dripping of water echoing through the Root base.

Danzo Shimura sat unmoving, his single visible eye half-closed. The faint glow of the oil lamp at his desk flickered across the countless scrolls and battle maps pinned to the walls, casting his shadow like that of a looming beast.

He had just received word of the Hokage's sudden summons. The ANBU had been called back en masse, abandoning all external missions. Such a move could only mean one thing Sarutobi had finally sensed a true crisis.

Footsteps approached outside. The door slid open with a creak.

Sarutobi Hiruzen stepped inside, his expression as grim as stone, the pipe in his hand unlit for once. Behind him trailed Hatake Kakashi, who kept his eyes lowered in silence.

Danzo did not rise. He only turned his head slightly, his single eye narrowing. "Hiruzen. You came in person. That alone tells me Konoha's situation is dire."

Hiruzen did not waste time with pleasantries. His voice was cold, solemn, carrying the weight of the Hokage's authority.

"Danzo, the time for hesitation is over. The masked man who controlled the Nine-Tails twelve years ago may have returned to Konoha. On top of Orochimaru's invasion, we face a threat greater than ever."

Danzo's expression remained unreadable, but his fingers tapped once against the armrest of his chair.

"So the shadow behind that night finally stirs again…" He let the words linger, tasting them like bitter poison.

Hiruzen stepped forward. His eyes, lined with age and fatigue, burned with renewed determination.

"Danzo, I want the command of the Root Organization. For the safety of the village, I will use every force at my disposal. You will yield control to me, tonight."

For the first time, Danzo's lips curved into the faintest of smiles thin, sharp, dangerous.

"You ask me to hand over Root? After decades of cursing my methods, Hiruzen, now you crawl back to them?"

His voice was like steel scraping against stone.

"Very well… but understand this: once Root is unleashed, it will not act with your naïve ideals. It will act with mine. Are you prepared for the consequences?"

The lamplight wavered, as though even the air itself trembled at the clash of two philosophies that had once built Konoha together and now stood at the brink of tearing it apart.

The Hidden Sound ninja by the window narrowed his eyes. His lips curled into the faintest trace of a smile.

"So that's them… Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha."

His voice was soft, almost a whisper, but there was a note of amusement buried deep within.

The lively scene outside the tower stood in stark contrast to the stillness of his figure.

Naruto and Sasuke sprinted shoulder to shoulder, their youthful rivalry burning even in a simple run. Behind them, Might Guy's disciple Rock Lee dashed effortlessly, his steps light and fierce, while his teammate Tenten trailed behind with her calm focus. Beside her, Sakura kept pace, though her eyes kept straying toward the two boys in front.

The atmosphere among them was bright, full of energy, the kind of bond only forged in battle and hardship.

The Sound ninja's fingers tapped lightly against the window frame, a rhythm that betrayed his calculating thoughts.

"Orochimaru-sama, the pieces you've set on the board… they're indeed interesting."

He tilted his head slightly, the sunlight cutting across his pale features, making his smile appear even colder.

"Uchiha Sasuke… and that jinchūriki boy. I suppose it's about time we test their limits."

He adjusted his glasses, the glint of the lenses briefly obscuring his eyes.

At that moment, from the hallway outside the dormitory, a faint knock echoed against the door.

The Sound ninja didn't turn. He merely said in a quiet, measured tone, "Come in."

The door creaked open, and another Oto-nin slipped inside, bowing low.

"Yakushi Kabuto. Orochimaru-sama has sent word. Preparations for the next stage are nearly complete."

Kabuto finally turned his gaze from the window, his expression calm, almost indifferent.

"…Very well. Tell Orochimaru-sama that everything is proceeding smoothly. By the time this exam reaches its climax, the stage will already belong to us."

The subordinate nodded and vanished as quickly as he had come.

Kabuto adjusted the strap of his Oto forehead protector and cast one last glance at the training grounds below. Googlᴇ search Nov3lFɪre.ɴet

The corners of his mouth lifted slightly, his voice no louder than a whisper.

"Show me… how brightly you can shine, Konoha's little flames. The stronger you burn, the more satisfying it will be to snuff you out."

Sakura quickly unscrewed the cap and held the bottle to Naruto's lips. "Here, drink slowly, Naruto. You'll choke if you rush."

Naruto wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand, grinning despite his exhaustion. "Heh… thanks, Sakura-chan." He gulped down a few mouthfuls before gasping for breath again, the heat in his body still surging from the hours of relentless running.

Beside him, Sasuke accepted Xiang's kettle in silence. He took a measured sip, then tilted his head back, letting the cool water wash away the dryness in his throat. His eyes, however, never lost their sharpness.

Naruto glanced at him from the corner of his eye. Even though they were both worn out, Sasuke's expression hadn't wavered once.

Tch… this guy never lets up.

Naruto clenched his fists again, his fighting spirit reigniting despite his trembling legs.

"Tomorrow, I'm still going to beat you, Sasuke!"

Sasuke let out a short, cold snort. "You can barely stand, dobe. You'll never surpass me if you keep saying the same thing."

Their gazes clashed in the dying light fiery determination against icy pride. The air between them crackled with unspoken rivalry, even after hours of punishing training.

Sakura and Xiang exchanged a look, half exasperated and half relieved.

"These two are impossible…" Sakura muttered, though there was a faint smile tugging at her lips.

Xiang, still holding her kettle, lowered her eyes and whispered almost to herself, "But… it's because of this that they won't lose to anyone else."

Above, in the dormitory, Kabuto adjusted his glasses and turned to Orochimaru. "They've already pushed themselves to this extent even without realizing what's ahead of them. Do you still insist Sasuke will be the one?"

Orochimaru's smile widened, thin and serpentine.

"Precisely because of that. That boy… no, both of them, are blooming with power and potential." His golden eyes narrowed, glinting with hunger. "But only Sasuke carries the true darkness that will ripen perfectly under my hand."

He tapped the windowsill with a pale finger, his voice dropping into a hiss.

"The Chunin Exams are only the beginning. Soon, they will understand what it means to be chosen… and what it means to be consumed."

The sky above the Death Forest turned pitch black, the cicadas silenced, leaving only the rustle of the leaves in the night wind.

A storm was brewing.
