Chapter 205: Proving Ground
Ethan stood in the center of the testing bay, his hands resting casually behind his back as he observed the silver-and-black organism flowing across the primary diagnostic platform.
The fluid, metallic mass shifted smoothly, rising to form a slender, humanoid torso but it soon collapsed as it had yet to bond. Soon a head emerged, and two narrow, luminous blue optics glowed brightly across its head, fixing its gaze entirely on Ethan.
“Ethan?” The voice vibrated gently through the comms system and echoed softly and clearly. This was quite interesting, as Ethan had already instructed N.E.A.R. to restrict access to the comms, but this meant Vaeris was instinctively hacking the signal.
"I'm right here, Vaeris," Ethan replied calmly, stepping forward. "How are you feeling? Any internal friction or structural instability?"
“No instability detected,” Vaeris projected, her voice carrying an unmistakable, wide-eyed curiosity. “Structure is... solid. Soft. Both. I am unsure. Ethan, what is this space? What are these heavy shapes around me?”
"This is my testing lab," Ethan said, pointing to the reinforced alloy target dummies set up at the far end of the bay. "And those 'shapes' are what we're going to use to see what you can do."
Vaeris flowed off the platform, her silver-grey striations gleaming under the overhead lights as she moved. Rather than slithering like a primal, predatory Klyntar, her ability to move was quite interesting, as it used the programmed machine cells working in tandem with her living biomass to transform into the shape of a bird.
“Why am I to test?” Vaeris asked, her thoughts brushing against Ethan's mind with the innocence of a newborn child. “Am I broken?”
"Not broken at all," Ethan assured her, a slight smile touching his lips. "We will try to test so that we may understand your capabilities and boundaries. I need to make sure you're fine, and you need to learn what you're capable of."
“Understand... boundaries,” she echoed, processing the concept instantly. “Where do I come from, Ethan? There are... spaces in my mind. Empty rooms where I think memories should be. Did I exist before here and the glass tank?”
Ethan paused, observing it closely. The diagnostic readouts on the terminal confirmed what he had hoped: his countermeasures had worked flawlessly.
By synthesizing the Machine Cells from the Techno-Organic Virus data he had scavenged from Bishop's lab at the X-Mansion, Ethan had repurposed the T/O virus's aggressive, self-contained hive-mind structure. The viral architecture had acted as a complete psionic shield, neutralizing Knull’s cosmic Klyntar hive-mind frequency and severing the organism from its ancestral genetic memory.
Without the violent, inherited memories of previous hosts, Venom’s memories, nor the corrupting reach of the dark god, Vaeris was truly a blank slate—not a traditional Klyntar, but the first of an entirely new synthetic, bio-mechanical species.
"You don't have past memories because you are the very first of your kind," Ethan explained patiently. "You don't have to worry about those empty rooms in your mind. You’re a newborn, so it's normal for there to be nothing. Besides, starting from now, we’ll both slowly fill those rooms up, partner."
Vaeris tilted her head, her luminous blue optics shifting in shape to mimic a thoughtful expression. “Partner. I like the word. What do we do first to start filling the rooms?”
"First, let’s see how your ability to physically adapt is," Ethan said, gesturing toward a ten-ton block of reinforced secondary steel. "Form a blade. Let's see how fast your nanites and biomass reconfigure."
“A blade... like the sharp tools on your desk?”
Before Ethan could answer, Vaeris's right wing in bird form dissolved into a shimmering metallic fluid. In less than a microsecond, the black symbiote formed the blade shape, and then the machine cells locked into place, forming the gleaming, deadly edge of the blade that hummed with such high-frequency kinetic energy that the edge moved like a chainsaw.
Without waiting for a command, she swung. The adamantium-reinforced edge cleaved cleanly through the ten-ton steel target like warm butter, leaving a glowing, red-hot seam.
“Did I do it correctly, Ethan?” she asked, immediately re-absorbing the blade back into a soft, gunmetal wing and looking up at him expectantly.
"Yes, you did. That had exceptional speed and power," Ethan said, checking the telemetry on his terminal. "Your structural density holding secondary adamantium attributes gives you cutting power on par with actual adamantium. That means whatever material you absorb in the future, you’ll be able to cut it despite it being the same hardness. Now, let's test your technopathy."
Ethan brought over an encrypted laptop and held it out. "Interface with its data. There is a message on it. Don't just break in and read it—try to see if you can get inside and out without it realizing what happened. Here’s a hint: although I’m not sure you can understand it, try to rewrite the access protocols without using brute-force decryption."
Vaeris extended a single, thin silver thread from her wing. The moment the bio-mechanical tendril touched the port, her blue optics flared with rapid streams of binary code.
“It is... loud inside here,” Vaeris noted, her voice humming with excitement. “So many pathway choices. I can hear the numbers and words singing. I can change the rules. The box now thinks I am its owner. Here I’ll let you see inside.”
Ethan checked the diagnostic monitor. The encryption had been bypassed and rewritten in under three seconds. The integration of N.E.A.R.'s sub-routines into her living carbon-silicon neural matrix gave her processing speeds that rivaled dedicated military supercomputers.
"Brilliant," Ethan murmured.
“Ethan?” Vaeris's voice softened, returning to her gentle mental touch. “You said we’re going to bond, right? When we do... when I cover you... will I hear your thoughts like I hear the machines?”
Ethan’s gaze narrowed slightly, his clinical focus taking over. This was the critical core of the test.
When they eventually merged, the T/O virus's hive-mind capabilities should allow them to form a closed, private neural link—a unique hive-mind shared exclusively between the two of them and any of Vaeris’ future offspring. But Ethan couldn't afford a single point of uncertainty. He only had one life and his knowledge was his lifeline. If even a lingering trace of Knull's connection or the original Venom's lingering psychic resonance remained dormant inside her biomass, bonding with her would expose his mind. It would leak his memories, his strategies, and his meta-knowledge of the entire Marvel universe to the cosmic entities that could destroy him instantly.
"Yes, when we bond, we will share everything," Ethan said softly. "Our thoughts, our strength, and our focus. But that is why I have to be absolutely certain you are entirely clean of outside influences."
“I am only me,” Vaeris stated simply, flowing closer and wrapping a gentle, cool tendril around Ethan's wrist without applying pressure. “I feel no one else. Only you, Creator. Only Ethan.”
"All my readouts agree with you," Ethan said, looking down at the clear diagnostic streams floating on his screens. "Every test is positive. The hive-mind connection seems to be completely gone. But I need one final, absolute verification before I let you bond with me."
“Another test?”
"A specialist," Ethan clarified, stepping back toward the main lab console. "She’ll be able to check if there’s anything to worry about."
He was referring to Emma Frost. Reading the mind of a bio-mechanical hybrid organism that possessed no traditional brain tissue would be a complex challenge even for a telepath of Emma's caliber. But her telepathic sight would be the ultimate detector. If there was even a microscopic psychic tether linking Vaeris to Knull, Emma would be able to spot the anomaly instantly.
Ethan checked the lab's secure surface monitors. The time was approaching mid-afternoon. He stretched as he’d been so absorbed in the experiment that his sense of time blurred.
By now, Emma had certainly finished her razor-sharp corporate discussion at Veritas & Book, leaving Mallory Book and Robert Hughes shocked by the reveal of the "Mrs. Maddox" revelation. According to her schedule, her next stop wasn't to head back; rather, she should be heading over to Midtown High to try to recruit Paige and Amy for her Academy.
"Vaeris, head back into the secondary containment cradle for now. You can sleep. I need to head out," Ethan instructed, inputting a standby command.
“Will you return soon?” Vaeris asked, her biomass smoothly receding back into the fluid chamber, her blue optics lingering on him through the glass.
"I will," Ethan said, sealing the hatch. "We have a guest arriving shortly, and once she confirms what I already know... we’ll take the final step."
