Chapter 203: The Tribunal
The towering glass spire housing Veritas & Book stood out against the rising morning sun. On the broad granite plaza out front, Mallory Book smoothed the lapel of her charcoal skirt suit, her posture immaculate, while Robert Hughes stood half a step behind her, adjusting his tie with a nervous energy.
Both held their phones in hand, the text message from Isaac Maddox still sitting fresh on their screens. Isaac’s briefing had been brief and characteristically pragmatic:
Emma Frost, Chairwoman of Frost Enterprises, is arriving at 0900. She wishes to partner with us on the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. project. She brings connections and financial backing which will allow you to move past many of the blockades you are currently facing. Assess her capabilities and integrate her support where it's needed. I leave the rest to your own discretion.
He had intentionally omitted any mention of the fact that Emma Frost also held the identity of Mrs. Maddox. Ethan could have informed them, but it was more fun if two of the sharpest minds clashed at full operational capacity, completely unburdened by social pleasantries or marital deference. He almost wanted to go and watch, but he had better things to do.
Five minutes before 9 a.m., a silver town car pulled smoothly up to the curb. The driver stepped out instantly, snapping the rear door open.
Emma Frost emerged. She stepped onto the granite plaza in a custom ivory coat, her icy blonde hair perfectly styled, radiating an effortless, terrifying aura of old-money authority.
"Ms. Frost," Mallory said, stepping forward with a poised, professional smile, holding out a hand. "Mallory Book. This is a realtor also working under Mr. Issac Maddox, Robert Hughes. Welcome to Veritas & Book."
"Ms. Book," Emma replied, her voice smooth as polished glass as she lightly accepted the handshake. She offered Robert a brief, polite nod. "Let us skip the pleasantries and head upstairs. We have a considerable amount of work to do and my time is quite limited."
As they crossed the marble lobby and stepped into the express elevator, the smooth ascent brought them directly to the top floor. The doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, high-octane operation. Over thirty paralegals, junior associates, and legal researchers darted between rows of modular desks, phones ringing incessantly as towering stacks of zoning documents and corporate filings were being sorted.
Emma swept her gaze across the room, taking in the sheer volume of high-efficiency legal machinery. ‘Not bad,’ she thought silently, assuming this was the result of years of established corporate growth. She was entirely unaware that barely a month ago, Veritas & Book had consisted of nothing more than Mallory, Robert, a single desk, and a overworked assistant running on cold coffee.
"This way to my private office," Mallory said, guiding Emma past the busy bullpen without missing a beat.
Inside the corner office, the glass walls offered a panoramic view of the industrial corridor below. Mallory gestured for Emma to take a seat at the leather conference table before sitting down opposite her, opening a thick leather-bound dossier. Robert stood nearby, a folder balanced on his arm.
"Let’s address the elephant in the room first," Mallory began, leaning forward. "Maddox Holdings is currently facing a coordinated blockade regarding the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. project. A coalition of old-money Manhattan wealthy upper class—relics acting on behalf of legacy energy conglomerates—have partnered with corrupt local zoning boards. They are filing endless injunctions, stalling our building permits, and attempting to bleed us through procedural delays."
Mallory closed the dossier and met Emma’s ice-blue eyes directly. "Mr. Maddox informed us that Frost Enterprises wishes to assist. So, Ms. Frost, I must ask: what specific legal or institutional leverage is your company prepared to offer to help us clear this hurdle?"
Emma leaned back in her chair, a slow, razor-sharp smile spreading across her lips. Her aristocratic arrogance filled the room, cold and suffocating.
"You are thinking like a lawyer, Ms. Book," Emma said, her voice dripping with dismissive authority. "You are preparing for a protracted war of attrition in municipal courtrooms. Frost Enterprises does not play in municipal sandbox fights. You need to think bigger."
She crossed one slender leg over the other, folding her hands in her lap.
"By noon today, Frost Enterprises will purchase controlling debt shares in three of the primary real estate firms backing those legacy law firms. By two o'clock, we will initiate hostile takeovers of two major regional banks currently holding the mortgages on those corrupt zoning officials' private properties. And by close of business, every single board member sitting on those municipal councils will receive a personal visit informing them that their entire financial portfolio is actively shorted by our international branch."
Emma tilted her head, her gaze piercing. "We do not file counter-motions, Ms. Book. We apply raw economic weight until the structure supporting our enemies collapses under its own bulk. The permits will be signed before the week ends, or the people holding the pens will no longer own the desks they sit behind. Is that enough?"
Silence stretched across the office. Robert blinked, taking a quick step back, while Mallory slowly sat back, a quiet, genuine spark of respect flickering in her eyes. The sheer brutality of the strategy was breathtaking.
"A remarkably effective application of corporate leverage," Mallory conceded smoothly, writing a single note on her pad. "Mr. Maddox certainly picked a formidable partner. Which brings me to my final question: what exactly does Frost Enterprises expect in return for deploying such extreme measures on behalf of Maddox Holdings?"
Emma maintained her flawless, aristocratic smile as she smoothed an invisible crease on her white sleeve.
"Frost Enterprises expects nothing," Emma replied softly. She looked directly at Mallory, letting the moment hang in the air. "Because as… Isaac’s wife, clearing childish roadblocks out of my husband's path is simply part of my marital duties."
The room went dead silent.
Robert’s jaw visibly dropped. The assistant, who had just stepped in to set down a tray of sparkling water, froze mid-reach, staring at Emma in absolute shock. Mallory’s pen stopped mid-stroke, her sharp eyes widening as she processed the words Isaac Maddox's wife.
While the three of them sat completely paralyzed by the revelation, Emma kept her expression perfectly serene, the picture of a dutiful, supportive spouse.
Inside her mind, however, she was screaming.
‘That arrogant, insufferable bastard,’ Emma cursed viciously behind her mental shields, her teeth gritting beneath her polite smile. ‘He didn't tell them. He didn't tell his own lead counsel we were married just so he could watch me drop the bomb myself. Oh, Ethan, oh Ethan, you are going to pay for this.’
"Wife?" Mallory finally managed to say, her voice regaining its composure, though her brow twitched slightly. "Mr. Maddox... didn't mention a marriage."
"Isaac is a man of few words," Emma said smoothly, rising gracefully from her chair and buttoning her coat. "Now, if you will excuse me, I have a few banks to buy out before lunch. Good day, Ms. Book. You’re more competent than our legal team. It makes me want to poach you, but I’ll refrain or I’ll get an earful from Isaac. It was quite a pleasure. I look forward to our next meeting."
