Marvel: Survivor’s Ascension

Chapter 201: The Trinity of Gears

The phone's glow cut through the dim, elegant kitchen. Emma analyzed the incoming data. Next to her, Ethan sat completely relaxed, his posture steady and his mind already calculating the variables of the next three moves on the board.

There was no warmth here, no sentiment, and certainly no trust. There was only the cold, unyielding gravity of mutual profit.

"You’ve been remarkably busy," Emma murmured, her manicured thumb scrolling past encrypted file layers that would give a cybersecurity team a collective aneurysm to hack. She stopped on a high-resolution medical schematic marked with the seal of the Ilithyia Institute. "Sarah Kinney? And her... daughter? Why are you so adamant I meet them? Explain."

Ethan leaned forward, his elbows resting on the marble island. "In the past, there was a program called Weapon X. It experimented on mutants, and their crowning achievement was Wolverine. His adamantium skeleton was their handiwork. There was a new offshoot of the Weapon X program, the Facility, which attempted to replicate Logan's genetic blueprint. They failed twenty-two times. The twenty-third attempt was a success, born from a scientist, Sarah Kinney's womb. They made a female clone, a perfect, feral weapon designated X-23."

Emma’s blue eyes flicked up, a sharp gleam of corporate and mutant interest igniting within them. "Wolverine’s clone. A fascinating asset. But according to this data, she was trained as an assassin by those people."

"She was," Ethan stated flatly. "But I had business in the area, so I helped them out. The head researcher wanted to kill Sarah, so before that happened, I deployed two acquaintances and some hired hands to save them and kill those in charge—the two acquaintances are currently the operational heads of the Black Orchard network, a new criminal organization that is currently taking over New York. They extracted Sarah Kinney and Laura, her daughter, alive and systematically erased everyone else inside. The two men in charge of the place, Dr. Martin Sutter and Dr. Zander Rice, are dead. The Facility's data cores have been thoroughly wiped, and their experimental data was taken by me. Most is useless, but some of the data is useful."

"A clean sweep, if I do say so myself," Emma observed, leaning back and bringing her glass of white wine to her lips. "And where are these little strays now?"

"In New York, under ironclad civilian identities. Sarah Kinney is one of the foremost experts in the field of genetics as shown by her ability to clone Wolverine. I value such talent, so to tie her to me, I even extracted Sarah's sister, Deborah, and her niece, Megan, as well. This also allowed me to remove any leverage external actors could use against them. With her whole family safe thanks to me, she feels compelled to work for me. They are currently embedded within the Ilithyia Institute, a genetics lab structured as a subsidiary under Maddox Holdings."

Emma let out a soft, amused hum. "And you’re offering this mutant child to the Massachusetts Academy. Why? I’m sorry to say you don’t seem like the charity type, Ethan."

"I’m not, like I said, the mother is talented enough for me to make a move, so I did. As for the daughter, I believe that a feral weapon with adamantium claws and a healing factor needs a healthy environment to grow, so I’m simply suggesting your school," Ethan responded coldly. "Your academy offers a sterile, prestigious environment to refine her social baseline while keeping her off Logan's radar for the time being. I believe if you pitch that to the girl’s mother, she might consider enrolling her. However, I have no intention of forcing her to join your school, so whether she enrolls depends entirely on your skill to persuade. If you succeed, you get a mutant asset to bolster your roster. Profit for you, insurance for me."

Emma smiled, a razor-sharp expression that held nothing but deep, professional appreciation. "A mutually beneficial arrangement. That works out since I needed to head over to see if those two girls you recommended, Amy and Paige, would transfer to my school. Adding one more will be fine. If the girl’s mother accepts, then I will have the admissions paperwork processed under her new identity that very day. Now, what is this second folder?"

Ethan reached across the table, tapping the screen to bring up a localized economic map of New Jersey. "The second item requires your physical presence. The main reason I needed you to follow me back to Newark."

"You’ve been saying that since earlier. I was already planning to head to the area. Why do you need me to personally follow you?" Emma asked, her tone dripping with a natural disdain she exuded when she thought of others like her father trying to decide her fate.

"I need your help with something. Something I thought you might be interested in. Both as an academy head master and head of a corporation," Ethan corrected, entirely unbothered by her elitism. "The project is called I.M.A.G.I.N.E.— Isaac Maddox Aid for Growth, Initiative, Nurture & Empowerment. It’s designed to work as a massive, wide-reaching corporate philanthropy campaign focused on urban development, genetic healthcare, and high-tech infrastructure. It will also help Maddox Holdings establish total logistical dominance over the metropolitan area's resource pipelines."

Emma’s eyes narrowed as she scanned the economic projections. "Maddox Holdings is a newborn entity, Ethan. No matter how brilliant your legal counsel is—and I admit, Mallory Book, whom I’ve heard of, is a delightfully ruthless creature—new money always faces friction from the old guard, no matter the era. The established oligarchs will stonewall your zoning permits out of sheer habit."

"Which is precisely why Frost Enterprises is going to inject a massive wave of capital into the project," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, transactional rhythm. "I don't just want your money, Frost. I want your name. I want the years of institutional weight and terrifying corporate terror that the Frost family line carries. When Frost Enterprises co-signs the I.M.A.G.I.N.E. project, the bureaucrats won't see an aggressive, upstart new-money firm. They will see an untouchable conglomerate. My subordinates, Mallory Book and Robert Hughes, are handling the legal and operational setups perfectly, but your presence will turn a knife-fight into a smooth, bloodless transition."

Emma swirled her wine, her mind immediately calculating the market impact. "A joint venture of this scale would require a massive public justification. The board of Frost Enterprises will want to know why I am anchoring our resources to an upstart."

"You won't be anchoring to an upstart. Did you forget? You will be anchoring to your new husband. That small detail will turn this from a reckless decision into a chance for Frost Enterprises to make a connection with an up-and-coming titan in the industry." Ethan met her gaze, his expression entirely devoid of emotion. "As a high school student, I am physically and legally restricted from attending the high-society galas, political fundraisers, and international meetings required to cement Isaac Maddox’s status. But you can. You will attend these functions as the wife of Isaac Maddox, representing his interests with the full authority of both the Frost and Maddox names. Such a thing will bring Frost Enterprises endless benefits, and the board will be on board, forgive the pun, when they learn that you have the right to make decisions for your husband."

Emma’s fork paused. She looked at him, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across her lips as she fully parsed the absolute lack of sentimentality in his proposal. "Using a fictional marriage to forge an absolute corporate monopoly. You truly are a monster after my own heart… darling. The public optics will be spectacular. A union between Frost Enterprises and Maddox Holdings sends a very clear, very terrifying message to our competitors: if you attempt to squeeze the new kid on the block, you will be crushed by the oldest money in the country. A nice and constant threat."

"Exactly," Ethan said. "You play the proud, terrifying wife on the global stage, and in return, Frost Enterprises gets a ground-floor stake in the technological and genetic patents coming out of the Ilithyia Institute and Cybertek Systems, with the addition of a few other perks. We consolidate the market before the rest of the world even realizes there's a game being played."

Emma set her wine glass down, her fingers drumming rhythmically against the marble. "A brilliant corporate marriage, Ethan. Truly. But we both know you didn't hand me a military-grade encrypted device just to talk about real estate and public relations. What is the final end goal of this? Before I agree to anything, I need to know the reason to work with you."

Ethan’s smirk vanished, replaced by an icy intensity that caused the temperature in the room to feel as though it had dropped several degrees. He slid his finger down to the third, most heavily locked directory on the screen.

"There are many reasons, but currently we’ll focus on the Octessence," Ethan said softly. "Eight ancient, demigod entities. A few have chosen their vessels on Earth—the Exemplars. Once eight Exemplars are chosen, then their descent has already begun, and their combined power will be enough to tear the psychological and physical fabric of this world to pieces."

Emma’s posture stiffened. As a telepath, she could instantly feel the shifts in Ethan's mental state; though his mind was locked behind an impenetrable block of logic, the sheer weight of his calculation was palpable. "An existential threat. You’ve never told me how, precisely, you intend to stop eight living gods?"

"With a telepathic weapon of absolute scale," Ethan replied. "My plan is simply to break the link between the Octessence and their Exemplars. I require a few things to achieve that, the most important being a mind capable of generating a planetary-level psychic frequency. As you know, a few weeks ago, I orchestrated Xavier’s rescue. I had Peter Parker, Daredevil, and Nova infiltrate a rogue facility to rescue Charles Xavier from the sentient Cerebro unit."

Emma scoffed, her lip curling in distaste. "Oh, Xavier’s rescue was a part of this? I thought you simply used that to make a connection with those X-Men and me."

"I did, but that was just a small side effect," Ethan said dismissively. "The main reason was that I needed his powerful telepathic mind. Charles Xavier is Plan A. His mind has the cumulative experience and raw weight to act as my primary psychic battering ram when the Exemplars descend. If Xavier fails, or if his fragile morality gets in the way of the execution, Jean Grey is good Plan B. Her raw talent is unmatched, but her stability is a fluctuating variable, so I value Xavier more than her at this moment."

Emma’s eyes flashed with a spark of genuine offense. She leaned forward, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy purr. "And where do I sit on this little hierarchy of yours, Ethan? I would think you would use me. My telepathy is a weapon of precision, although I am well aware of where my raw output stands compared to the mutant saint and his favorite pupil. I still seem to be a safer and easier option compared to them."

"Yes, compared to them, you would be a better choice, mainly due to the fact that we’re working together. However, I didn’t choose you due to a few reasons, the first being that you lag behind them in areas of sheer talent and cumulative experience no offense," Ethan stated flatly, his voice utterly merciless in its honesty. "Another being that if you went up against the psychic backwash of an Octessence god today, your mind would most likely slide into a permanent vegetative state. As an associate of mine, I must do my best to ensure your safety because I need you for something else later."

Emma’s jaw tightened, but before she could speak, Ethan tapped the screen again, displaying a blueprint that caused her breath to catch in her throat.

"Which is why I plan to build a bridge to close the gap," Ethan said, a cold, triumphant smile playing on his lips. "When we met at the X-Mansion, I had just finished sneaking into their lower basement level; I copied a few of their files. Including the complete engineering schematics for Cerebro."

Emma leaned closer, her eyes tracking the impossible lines of the blueprint. "This... this doesn't look like Xavier's Cerebro. The scale and shape are completely wrong."

"Because Xavier's version was built using baseline technology and basic Shi'ar, an alien race’s logic. Fun fact: Charles had files on their tech, and it was a pain to learn," Ethan explained, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the schematics. "I’ve been working on it for a few weeks, and I managed to completely re-engineer the platform. I miniaturized the entire system, condensed the psychic amplification matrix by a factor of four hundred, and eliminated the feedback loop vulnerabilities. In layman's terms, it’s smaller and improved."

He zoomed out, showing the manufacturing logs of a dormant corporation. "Under the Isaac Maddox identity, I quietly purchased Cybertek Systems—a highly advanced robotics and cybernetics laboratory. I’ve kept it completely dark until now. Unlike the other facilities, I haven't rebranded it or staffed it, because its sole purpose is to act as a secure, automated assembly line for my custom, portable Cerebro unit."

Ethan looked directly into Emma’s stunned eyes, the full weight of his strategic architecture laid bare.

"With the customized Cerebro unit I am building for you at Cybertek, your precision will be backed by an artificial amplification wave that matches Xavier’s raw mass without sacrificing an ounce of your control," Ethan whispered, the words sounding like a dark promise. "You are Plan C, Emma. My ultimate fail-safe. If the two pawns fall, then the white queen takes the board."

Emma stared at the blueprint for a long, silent moment. The offense she had felt seconds ago dissolved entirely, replaced by a profound, intoxicating rush of realization. This boy was much more dangerous than she had first thought. They had met weeks ago, and while she thought he was just a child, he was already taking actions with the thought in mind that she would join him.

She slowly reached out, her manicured fingers gently tapping the screen of the phone, closing the files and sealing the encryption lock. She looked across the table at the high school boy who moved through the world honestly with more grace and cunning than the Black King Shaw.

"A clone of Wolverine to train, a global corporate empire to rule as Mrs. Maddox, and a planetary-grade psychic weapon built exclusively for my mind," Emma murmured, her voice dripping with a mix of dark amusement and unyielding ambition. "You certainly know how to treat your wife, Ethan."

Ethan stood up, ruffling his hair as the cold, imposing weight of his strategic mind settled back beneath his quiet, teenage exterior. "We are tied by profit, Emma. Nothing more, nothing less. So long as our interests align, then the money and power you’ll obtain from out joint effort will make you marvel. I’d like to leave at dawn. I do hope you’ll join me."

"Yes, I will. Then would you like to sleep next to your wife tonight, Isaac?" Emma replied, a sharp, brilliant smile touching her lips as she picked up her wine glass once more.

Ethan looked at her with a cold smirk and replied, “I know you’re teasing, but sorry, I’m afraid I’ll have to pass. My wife likes to snoop through minds.”
