Game of Thrones : True Dragon

Chapter 182 179: The Prince of Prophecy

"I may have been a little hasty, my lady, but you need to understand something," Viserys told the red priestess. "Ruling a kingdom this vast means every word and every move is an act of power. A king's actions shape everything around him."

"I understand, Your Grace," Melisandre said, nodding with quiet resignation.

This young king burned with raw ambition and iron arrogance, just like the proud Dragonlords who came before him. He shone like the sun itself, blinding and unstoppable, but men like that never bent easily. They were pure pragmatists who bent the world to their will instead.

Without that kind of ruthless confidence, the king without a throne would never have clawed his way back from nothing.

Ancient Valyria had worshipped a thousand gods, yet the Dragonlords had never truly bowed to any of them. They saw every deity as a lie spun to control slaves, and they placed themselves above it all.

Melisandre had no choice but to accept her own choice. Viserys was the sign from the Lord of Light. There could be no mistake. Even if the prophesied prince carried more than his share of flaws, even if the Dragon King's pride ran hot and sharp, he was still the hero destined to break the darkness. She would serve.

"But I am curious," Viserys said. "How exactly did you find your way here?"

"Prophecy has lived in the world for a long time," she answered. "The stories of blood and fire point to the path of the prince. I was in Asshai, but I believed Azor Ahai would be reborn in the west. At first I thought Dragonstone might be the place of salt and smoke."

"The west?"

"Yes, Your Grace. Asshai lies in the east, but the Great War that shaped everything happened on the Sunset Kingdoms. Ancient evil is gathering strength there, Your Grace. Forces too terrible to name. The cold wind is already rising, and the Long Night is coming unless brave people rise to meet it."

Melisandre's logic held. The Heart of Winter sat at the edge of Westeros, where ice gathered thickest. The fire of Valyria burned in the ruins. The clash between them would happen on the western continent.

"This story is slowly becoming truth," she said. "Every red priest is singing it now. We may disagree on the details, but the faith is the same."

The tale of Azor Ahai was ancient and well known, though the red priests shouted it loudest these days. Every culture had its own name for the hero who would end the Long Night. In Asshai he was Azor Ahai. In other lands he carried other names. Even in Westeros the Last Hero carried the same core story.

Azor Ahai needed certain signs. The stars would bleed after a long summer. That had already happened. He would be reborn amid salt and smoke. Some said Dragonstone. Others said a pyre. He would wake dragons from stone. He would wield Lightbringer, a burning sword.

Different red priests argued over the details, but Viserys already checked more boxes than anyone else. He had hatched dragons in fire. He had woken a bleeding sword. He had been born amid salt and smoke, surrounded by tears and death. And he commanded living dragons that breathed flame.

"Spread the story," Viserys told her. "Make it real."

"As you command, Your Grace," Melisandre said. "I will begin in Tyrosh and move outward. Every red temple will know the truth. You are the prince reborn. You will break the darkness and bring an endless summer. Even death itself will bow to you."

Viserys smiled, cold and satisfied. He was not content to simply be Azor Ahai. He wanted every title the world could offer. Dragon King. Father of Dragons. Breaker of Chains. Prince of Prophecy. He would wear them all like armor.

At the red temple in Tyrosh, the priests were already preaching the new gospel. They stood before crowds of freedmen and shouted that Viserys was the one the stars had foretold. The bleeding comet proved it. The Dragon King had risen from salt and smoke, woken dragons from stone, and drawn a burning sword from the flames. Those who fought for him would be reborn in an endless summer.

"Viserys the King!"

"Viserys the King!"

The crowd roared back, swept up in the tide.

Viserys stood in his study and listened to the reports with a thin, hungry smile. He was claiming every mantle the world offered. If the red priests wanted a savior, he would give them one. And he would make sure the whole world knew exactly who that savior was supposed to serve.
