Chapter 35 – Making a Name for Herself
Chapter 35 - Making a Name for Herself
Once Valmyst felt confident in her abilities, she didn’t hold back on going on missions.
There was some difficulty with actually joining teams and parties. Unless she went with Catcher, most groups didn’t just want an extra person to just tag along, as that meant splitting the profits more. If they wanted her on their team, then it meant they needed her specific set of skills or had no other options.
Valmyst gained the title of the second best option if you couldn’t get a healer.
Various emotions were ready to go to war at that statement. The scorpion herself had also gained some pride and arrogance in her abilities.
Why is a healer necessarily better than me!? Wouldn’t people want to not be hurt in the first place?
The sad truth was it wasn’t unusual for a healer to have at least one defensive magic. Only people like Valmyst had delved truly into the path of defensive mages dedicated multiple skills to such abilities.
Between pure defensive and utility, half of her skills were dedicated to her defensive mage role.
Name: Velasteros
Species: [Amethyst Jewelled Scorpion] [35/50]
Skills: 6/6
[Crush] Lv14
[Barrier] Lv10
[Force Pull] Lv26
[Human Shifting] Lv1
[Eyes Of Crystal] Lv1
[Reinforce] Lv6
Valmyst [Intelligence] had also grown by a large amount.
[Intelligence] - 164
There was improvement and also not much improvement. The fact remained that in many ways intelligence was the worst stat to focus on. If she placed those points anywhere else, there would be noticeable improvement, but intelligence had felt like it reached a plateau.
That’s not going to stop me.
Still didn’t prevent her from dumping a whole lot of points into it. Valmyst had no plans to give up on her investment. She saw potential, she saw possibility, she was addicted and had no plans on changing her mind.
Fear still existed of what would happen when her instincts took over her and caused her to no longer be herself.
Besides that complicated stuff, she had headaches way less frequently. Only when she stayed up late reading under the lamp light.
“Turned down again…” Valmyst sighed as today hadn’t been a successful day in trying to find work. The backup option of looking for Catcher had disappeared after he went on a longer trip. Strange that the first person she really had a normal bond with was gone like that but as she watched people and tried to track how the various people came in and out of the guilds, she learned it wasn’t uncommon.
There was no long goodbye, just a promise to see each other again relatively soon.
The friendly scorpion looked at the request, and none seemed suitable for her. Herbs and gathering requests had already had their supplies maxed out on what the major players were willing to buy—partly due to the scorpion herself. Unless she could strike a deal with individual buyers, those missions would not be around for a while.
What to do, what to do. Don’t think about reading. Don’t think about reading… crap, I am thinking about reading… ergh… but it is the perfect way to pass the time. Sigh. I need to do some productive things, otherwise I won’t be able to afford more books.
Valmyst stayed around seeing if she could find something.
Her occupation skills underwent improvements from her training and work, and she even found time to develop [Crush]. Sure, its growth wasn’t as high as it would’ve been if she lived the life of a monster full-time, but her life priorities were vastly more important. Still, she found time to change into her scorpion form to get practice in. There was only so much ‘reliance on instincts’ she could stomach and Valmyst wanted to properly develop her own combat sense.
The other two skills showed no improvements but there was no way she was going to remove them. [Human Shifting] was too important and while in her human form she could see perfectly fine, [Eyes Of Crystal] was still very important for her scorpion transformation.
Being looked over for standard healers was annoying but was something Valmyst was sure with exposure she would get more people willingly look for her for jobs. There were a few truths that made everything a wee bit difficult. Her profession, which made it hard for people to judge. Second, while in direct combat not being hurt could be better than not being injured at all, a healer could also provide aid during the travel. If someone randomly got cut or fell, or a person got sick on their journey. Those aspects Valmyst couldn’t just find a replacement for.
I think it would just be better to leave and hunt for food at this point.
She decided tonight would be better spent on active scorpion duty. So resting before the night came was the simple solution.
“You!” A woman, who the well-behaved scorpion had never seen before, appeared before her yelling with a voice that may’ve had a hint of anger.
“Yes?” Valmyst quickly examined the person before. Taller than her. That was a problem. Long black that was on a loose braid. Contrasting the hair was silver feathers poking out above her ears and matching sharp silver eyes. Her clothes were clearly custom ordered, which wasn’t unusual for adventure garb, it was a trend that when people were skilled (and rich enough), they would splurge to get some personalised adventure gear.
The woman took another step forward, glaring down on Valmyst.
What did I do????
She looked into her mind for answers, but besides panic, which was panicking, every other emotion seemed to be elsewhere minding their own business instead of helping her.
You are all useless!
“You have been stealing my work.”
“...”
I’m still so confused.
Apparently she had become famous in at least one person’s mind, for a reason she had no understanding for.
