Chapter 1 — Two Years Wasn’t Long Enough
Two years had passed since my birthday
and since that day I thought I would
finally be taking it nice and easy. Right?
Like I just came to this world, saved a
dragon prince's father from death, changed
history, met the real Calamity Princess —
except this time she was repackaged
differently. She made a deal with the evil
goddess of this world and chose to become
a fairy that could travel through worlds
if she wanted to. But she chose to stay
and harass me on a daily basis like a fly
that won't die. Trust me I tried. But when
I swatted her she came back at me with her
fists clenched ready to box.
CLACK CLACK CLACK
Two years of that. Two years of training,
healing, and growing into whatever this
world needed me to be. I caught my
reflection in the ward window as I walked —
same silver white hair pulled into a high
ponytail, same red eyes my father passed
down to me, same black horns sitting right
where they always sat. Thirteen now. Still
small. Still me. Just harder around the
edges than I used to be.
Clack Clack Clack
I walked down the hall of my hospital.
The Nocturnal Mercy Ward that my father
built for me when he found out I could
heal demons.
Wearing my new doctor uniform that Scorin
gave me for Christmas last year. Black and
purple with sigils engraved on the coat —
protection symbols stitched into every
inch of it like he was making a point.
My long silver white hair was tied into
a ponytail like I was already ready to
fight someone before I even got to work.
Jessica caught up to my pace and relayed
the next patient I had to see. She wore
her head nurse uniform — black and white
with a purple rose emblem pinned to the
right side of her shirt. She was already
laughing while holding the patient's
folder close to her chest.
"You're not going to believe this but
somehow a child shoved a small toy wheel
up his right nostril."
FLAP!
I snatched the folder from her so fast
she thought she still had it in her hands.
"Can you take your job seriously for
once?… sheesh…"
I grabbed my reading glasses from my
lab coat chest pocket and fixed them
on my face so I could actually read
the thing. As I read through the folder
I stopped in place.
"How far did the child push it into
his nose?"
I opened the folder and saw the x-ray
of the young demon boy. The small toy
wheel had gone so far up his nose that
his little fingers couldn't even reach
- I closed the folder and walked off
small giggle. It brought me back to the
human world — a mother who once brought
her son into the hospital for the exact
same thing. A little Spanish boy with a
Hot Wheel stuck up his nose.
"Children sure are wonderful… aren't they?"
I walked off leaving Jessica standing
there with a face full of confusion like
I was speaking in riddles. She grabbed
a notepad from inside her scrubs then
wrote down some notes about my habits.
On the back of it sat a crimson symbol
that belonged to my father, Malphas.
After she finished her notes she tucked
it back and buttoned her shirt.
"Wait for me Sophia!"
She speed walked to catch up as I entered
the room with the little demon boy and
his mother. She wore commoner demon
clothes and had black hair, her eyes
full of desperation the moment I walked in.
"Oh doctor! You're here! Finally please —
my son, I just can't get the toy out
of his nose!"
I held her hand calmly and looked at her
with the deep red eyes my father passed
down to me.
"Ma'am he's going to be just fine. After
this my assistant will bring you both to
the lunch room to get something to eat, okay?"
I let go of her hand and left her in
quiet shock. Those words alone were enough
to make her feel calm and safe. I walked
over to the patient table where the young
demon boy sat breathing out of one nostril,
looking at his mother like she was being
dramatic. Then he turned his gaze to me
and his bright purple eyes lit up like
he had just seen his hero.
"De… Demon Saint?! Why are you taking
care of me?!"
I looked at him with suspicious eyes and
placed both hands on my hips.
"I mean I can get someone else if you
want to be like that, little boy…"
He straightened up instantly and apologized
until I felt better about myself. Moments
later he was lying down on the patient
bed while I looked into his nose with a
small scope and light. His mom stepped
out for a cup of coffee while I worked.
"So tell me — what made you think putting
a wheel up your nose was a good idea?
I'm genuinely curious."
I grabbed a pair of long tweezers from
the instrument table beside me. He started
talking like a hook line and sinker.
"Well… I was at the park playing with
my friends…"
He winced as I guided the tweezers in,
his right eye going half lidded as he
gritted his teeth.
"They dared me! They dared me!"
I pulled out the small wheel along with
the truth. I set it on a clean napkin
and held it up so he could see it —
still covered in boogers and a little
blood from how deep it had gone.
"So uh… you want it back?"
He looked at me like he had just received
the most important life lesson of his
existence. I closed my eyes and smiled,
then produced a grape flavored lollipop
from my coat pocket.
"For coming clean and being a good boy.
Now let's go find your mom and get you
some food."
I gave him a clean napkin to blow his
nose, rinsed it with safe disinfectant
solution, and we left the patient room
together to meet his mother in the hall.
"Come on. I haven't eaten yet either."
The mother and her son sat in their own
booth in the cafeteria. Jessica ordered
my usual while sipping on her peanut
butter iced coffee with whipped Nutella.
GRUMBLE
"Oof!"
I covered my stomach with both arms from
embarrassment.
"Hahaha!"
Jessica laughed at me like she was looking
for a reason to get fired. Before I could
lash back my waiter rushed over with food
like his life depended on it. He had green
skin and pitch black eyes that looked like
a cloudless night sky. His hair was kept
in long black braids — each loop so clean
he looked like he had just left the salon.
"Princess! Sorry for the delay but as
usual your order is the biggest one."
I had stopped denying how much I ate ever
since Belzagus put me on this new demon
diet during training. He always said I
needed to eat more because of my weaker
frame compared to male demons in this
world. Like — little brother I get it,
you wrote the story and we're both trapped
in it. But he is such a no nonsense pain
in the head.
"Ritchie you already know me since your
first day. Just talk to me casual already!"
I grabbed my fork and started eating like
I hadn't seen food in days. Ritchie stared
at me with that look — the one that said
he was trying to be a better person but
couldn't quite get there. He sighed and
placed my giant smoothie down. The one
Belzagus made sure Ritchie served me
every single time I came in.
"My name is Alan. I've told you this
so many times already."
I swallowed my food and pointed my fork
at him like this was somehow his fault.
"You put Ritchie on your resume and
honestly I like it. So you're Ritchie to me."
Ritchie took a slow deep breath like he
had decided not to have this conversation
again.
"Yes… Princess."
I had a warm smile on my face as I ate
without a problem in the world. Sweet
bliss. Filling my stomach to the limit
so I could push through the rest of the
day. I spoke with my mouth full of eggs
and bacon.
"Don't let this moment end…"
TAP TAP
A black crow sat on the window ledge
outside and tapped on the glass with
its beak. Ritchie walked by carrying a
milk crate full of cartons.
"Huh… What's that?"
He turned his head and saw the crow —
wearing a necklace that belonged to the
king himself. He groaned and set the
crate down on the floor. He looked at
- Then at the crow.
Ritchie walked over and opened the window
slowly, making sure I couldn't hear it.
As usual I would have run the moment I
spotted the crow — but it looked like
Ritchie had just backstabbed me.
SHH-CLUNK
The window opened and the crow spread
its pitch black wings, swallowing the
daylight whole. Its crimson red eyes
locked onto me immediately.
FWOOM FWOOM
I heard wings in the air but Jessica
started talking loudly — like she was
deliberately trying to drown out the
incoming danger flapping straight toward me.
Ritchie disappeared into the back kitchen
to restock inventory and left the window
wide open behind him.
"So about the next patient—"
I finished my food and my smoothie while
Jessica kept talking.
TAP TAP
"Huh. What was that?"
Jessica stopped talking and sat peacefully
in her seat, sipping her iced coffee like
nothing was happening. Then my father's
voice came from behind me — but I couldn't
sense him actually being here. Belzagus
had taught me how to sense danger. It was
an ability from my mother's side of the
family — one she hadn't inherited. One
I had.
"My fierce daughter… When you are done
with work tonight please return home.
We need to have a meeting."
I turned around. My father's crow was
perched on top of the booth wall like
it had already made itself at home. It
turned its head left and right scanning
the room — its eyes moving across every
person sitting and eating, listening into
our conversation. I groaned and slumped
into my seat. The window to escape was
already gone. And no — I'm not talking
about the window Ritchie left open.
"Can you be a normal father for once?
I have a cell phone you know?"
The crow's eyes glowed deep crimson as
it answered with a sly tone.
"You always leave me on seen."
I looked over at Jessica. She sat there
quietly sipping her coffee with a cheeky
smile like everything was going exactly
according to her plan.
I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah… I'll be there."
