We are now entering the last part of the war arc and the final 11 chapters of Book 2!

Below is a brief timeline of the Northern Campaign so far, meant as a quick reference to help orient readers in the movement, geography, and sequence of events. It should make it easier to follow the locations, routes, distances, and timing that will matter more and more in the chapters ahead, especially as the campaign narrows toward its end.

Early August 1436 — The northern road chosen​

• Early August 1436: arrival at Thessaloniki; Heptapyrgion council and final strategic argument: do not sprint to Constantinople; Skopje is named the hinge (Serbia link + Macedonian control).
• The host marches north; the campaign becomes motion.

Mid-August 1436 — The Vardar road and Demir Kapija (Iron Gate)​

• Through the Iron Gate: first deaths, captured rider, confirmation Skopje’s Kale holds only a few hundred.
• Week later: Skopje comes into view.

Early September 1436 — Skopje taken​

• Early Sept 1436: siege begins; one-day battering demonstration; Constantine halts guns and offers terms; surrender follows.
• Skopje becomes a powder-production hub (Niketas installed; inventory sealed).
• Three days later: Grgur arrives with ~4,000+ Serbs, binding coalition in fact.

Late September → Early October 1436 — Sofia is taken​

• Late Sept 1436: march out.
• Early Oct 1436: Sofia is burned/poisoned/emptied; Constantine refuses to winter there; chooses to press forward.

October, 1436 — Zlatitsa Pass forced; Fruzhin joins​

• Oct 20, 1436: Zlatitsa Pass fight begins; heights seized; choke reduced by guns and coordinated assault.
• Oct 26, 1436: columns emerge into Thrace; road to Philippopolis opens.
• Oct 27, 1436: meeting at Sveti Spas; Fruzhin joins (~2,000).

November 2, 1436 → Winter 1436–1437 — Raid, Maritsa crossing, Philippopolis winter-lock​

• Nov 2, 1436: Akıncı raid hits camp; Thomas wounded; one-day operational halt to repair the army’s ability to move.
• Early November: Maritsa crossing engineered via Adata Island; Philippopolis secured.
• Winter: Philippopolis fortified into a winter fortress; assignments lock down Trajan’s Pass, countryside provisioning, and the supply spine.

Mid-March (1437) — Edirne​

• Mid-March: Campaign moves again (Manole → Chirpan), garrisons left; march proceeds with nightly fortifications.
• Halil’s timing report: Constantine left Chirpan and is three or four days from Edirne; Halil chooses “move the king” toward Constantinople and sacrifice Edirne as a delaying city.

Late March 1437 — The war splits: sea and river​

• Late March 1437: arrival at Ainos; Roman squadron anchors at the Maritsa mouth.
• Meeting with the Gattilusio: loyalty reaffirmed.
• Naval intelligence: Gallipoli ~30 galleys + many fustas.

Late March 1437 — Edirne​

• Late March 1437: Romans reach Edirne west of the Tunca; west bank stripped; bridge damaged and barricaded.
• Report: Ottoman main force left 3-4 days ago toward Constantinople; letters sent to Ainos and Galata.

Late March → Early April 1437 — Edirne taken​

• Late March 1437: Tunca crossing secured; siege ring closes;
• Early April 1437: sustained bombardment opens two breaches; assault launched
• By evening: Edirne effectively captured.
