Chapter 96: Medicine after death.
July 16 2026, 7:27pm.
Kai should stop talking now that Celine’s heart was beating so rapidly against her chest that her hands started to shake, but he didn’t. If anything, her flushed face and beading forehead were his tell-tale sign that she had been lying for so long.
That she knew a truth that no one else did... until now.
For a long time, he suspected that Elara might never have fallen from up there, but he had no proof.
Now, this here was proof.
He stalked closer to Celine, his strides sure and steady. The look in his eyes was so dark that it had chills spreading across Celine’s back. But he did not back down even as she started to cry and shake her head. He also did not care that she was fidgeting and on the verge of hyperventilating.
All he cared about was the truth.
"How did she bounce back to good health in less than a week? How is it that the only thing she sustained from falling from that height was a sprained ankle and a broken wrist?" Kai continued, reveling in the way his wife staggered backward, her face as white as a sheet of paper.
"Isn’t that a bit too unusual... Celine? That school is sixteen floors high and the library is on the sixteenth floor..." he continued, tooting mockingly when she staggered so much that her back hit the wall behind her.
"The more I think about it, the more I am certain that if someone falls from the sixteenth floor, from a place as high as that, they would die... and that includes me, a beta wolf. Hell, even Flynn, who is the Alpha, would die from that height and so would his father, bless his soul..."
"Kai—" Celine began to say but stopped when he waved his hand dismissively and continued;
"Okay, let us not exaggerate too much... they may not die immediately but they would sustain injuries so great, their chances of survival would be as slim as your surgically enhanced nose." He finished and almost laughed when Celine subconsciously touched her nose.
Almost.
That is until she put on a mask of indignation and came to stand in front of him with both hands planted on her waist. "I don’t understand what you’re talking about!" Celine rushed in, but at the time, it was already too late.
She spoke up too late. Reacted too late. And for this reason, her reaction felt like the popular saying: ’medicine after death’.
It lacked substantial weight and floated around them like a flimsy piece of paper.
Kai, seizing the opportunity, grabbed her hand and stopped her from moving any further. His grip around her wrist was hard and punishing. It burned into her skin, bruising almost instantly.
He pressed his face down until it was barely a breath away from hers and curled his other hand around the back of her neck, keeping her in place. Like this, she had nowhere else to run and her knees wobbled as she looked into the swirling dark orbs that belonged to her husband.
"You know the truth, don’t you?" He sneered, his breath fanning her face.
She gulped.
"All I know is that Elara fell. She was pushed from the rooftop by your jealous daughter, but she miraculously survived..."
"She also miraculously only broke a wrist and sprained her ankle? And then she miraculously demanded to eat chicken soup barely two days into her recovery?"
The mockery in his tone was evident and it washed over Celine like a tidal wave. For a moment, her lips clamped shut while her body quaked with a gazillion emotions all at once.
Kai’s fingers dug deeper into her flesh, earning him a shocked wince that immediately slipped out of her mouth. His other hand tightened around her neck, and Celine instinctively knew that he would hurt her if she didn’t tell the truth.
I mean, it was evident in his behavior. It was as clear as day in his eyes.
Tears streamed down her face and her lower lip trembled as she cried; "I didn’t ask her to do it! I tried to tell her that it was too dangerous! Nyx’ara didn’t—"
*Cough, cough*
A deep throaty sound echoed through the room, snapping both man and wife out of their little ’bubble’. Kai was the first to react and he immediately dropped his hand from Celine’s neck. The other hand gripping at her arm went slack and his eyes widened... only for a moment... before a knowing smile flashed across his lips.
*Cough, cough*
The sound came again, louder this time and Celine dashed away from her husband’s side to the bed. Her eyes immediately filled with tears when she saw Elara’s eyes slowly fluttering open.
And due to her excitement, she almost forgot what her husband had been doing to her barely seconds ago as she screamed; "Honey, your daughter is awake! Finally!"
Of course! Kai thought to himself but didn’t say that out loud.
It was funny how Elara had been in a ’self-induced coma’ but ’decided’ now that it was convenient to ’wake up’ seconds before her lies were exposed.
He flashed a smile at Celine— one that didn’t quite reach his eyes and then he mumbled. "The goddess has finally answered your prayer, hasn’t she?"
His tone was sweet but laced with more than enough venom to bring down Superman if he tried and the coldness that punctuated each syllable was not lost on Celine.
Her smile froze on her face for a second, but before she could get another word out, Kai came over to stand beside her, his stiff fingers lacing with Elara’s as she slowly ’regained consciousness.’
He then put on a performative smile and drawled at his daughter. His tone was strangely too soft as he muttered; "Welcome back, sweetie!"
Elara frowned slightly and stretched, her face and body pale as she asked; "What happened to me?"
But no one responded right away. They all knew that she was well aware of whatever shit might have happened to her.

A couple of feet away, Flynn Ravenscroft stood with his back pressed against the cool wall and his knuckles white as his fingers wrapped around the flower bouquet he held onto as if for dear life.
He had just finished with one of his company’s meetings and had decided to visit his unconscious fiancée when he had walked into a conversation that had changed the entire trajectory of the way he’d viewed things for the past three years.
For three years he had told himself not to think about that day Nyx’ara was accused of pushing Elara off the rooftop. For three years, he had convinced himself that Nyx’ara deserved to go to jail for trying to kill Elara in a fit of jealousy.
Was all of that a lie?
Had Elara planned it all to get Nyx’ara out of the picture?
His grip on the flower tightened so much that some of the branches snapped. But he didn’t care. All he cared about was the fact that he was a fool.
He had indeed let himself be fooled by the stupider sister and this was his karma.
He staggered away from the closed door and blindly fished through his pockets for his phone because for some reason right now, there was only one person he wanted to speak to and that was Nyx’ara.
