Bloodbound To My Four Archenemies.

Chapter 42: It should have been me.

June 20 2026, 9:12pm.

By the time Elara finally got home, she was foaming at the mouth due to her rage. She was throwing things around and gnashing her teeth so hard, she tasted the blood in her mouth.

Her expression was stony as she stepped out of Flynn’s car. She didn’t care to check if he was still awake or not after passing out drunk and pushed past the door to step into her stepfather’s house.

It wasn’t until she got inside that she allowed all the emotions rushing through her body to bring her to her knees.

Tears burned at the corners of her eyes. Her chest heaved, burning with rage and jealousy and hatred. She hated that Nyx’ara was always two steps ahead of her. Hated that she was so special, that she always easily had the things Elara had to struggle to get.

She was jolted out of her thoughts when firm hands clamped on her shoulders. Her red-rimmed eyes tore upward just then to see her mother, Celine, standing over her, staring at her with a conflicted expression on her face.

She asked; "What is it, baby?"

From the corner of her eyes, she saw Tristan and his father approaching. She saw the softness in their eyes as they regarded her. It was almost funny to think that they always treated her specially while their sister and daughter... their real blood, they always treated with scorn.

Guess, I’ll have to watch them wallow in agony upon realising what they’ve done to Nyx’ara.

Schooling her face into an expression of pure shock, she raised her eyes to meet her mother’s and then she sobbed;

"It’s about Nyx’ara."

And goddess, as soon as she said those words, something in the atmosphere shifted.

No one could see it but they could feel how dense the air suddenly became. Tension crackled in the air so thick that it sent a jolting sensation down Elara’s back.

Celine, who had been so stunned, she could barely breathe scooted closer to Elara. She asked; "What happened to Nyx’ara? Is she dead?"

Wouldn’t it be better if she was dead?

Elara shook her head. "No, she isn’t. The Sovereign Alphas... DARK... they married her. They didn’t kill her or jail her."

As soon as Elara said these words, the time in the room stopped. Everyone stared at her like she was mad.

Tristan, being the first to snap out of it, tilted his head to the side, a playful smile playing across his lips as he questioned her: "You know, that cannot be true," he said almost jokingly, "...she killed their sister, they should kill her or jail her."

Elara rolled her eyes in exasperation, flung her arms wildly, and snapped; "Do I look like I do not know what I am talking about? Do I look stupid? Nyx’ara was the bride today at the wedding and if you think I am lying, then you can ask Flynn!"

Tristan’s jaw dropped. "Nyx’ara married DARK? As in the feared quadruplets Alphas"

His voice was ice cold and chilly. It tore right out of his chest, bordering on frustration and disbelief.

Somewhere deep inside his heart, fear took root. Panic began to claw its way up his spine and cold... tons of it spread across his body like he had been shoved inside a refrigerator.

His eyes met Elara’s, and in that moment, a silent scream echoed between them.

The same fear flickered in their eyes.

He hissed; "That cannot be possible!"

"I wish you were there!" Elara countered, "I wish you had seen her in that dress that cost more than our home! She looked enchanting and even with all the comfort she is now surrounded with, she still made a one to pick on me."

"Oh, dear!" Celine cried out, pulling Elara to her chest.

Her heart ached for her daughter who had done everything to send that devil’s spawn right back to hell... and failed. She held onto her daughter for a long time like she would break, while her eyes occasionally darted to her husband’s, who hadn’t said a word since.

"Kai!" Celine hissed, her eyes blazing. "Your daughter is hurt! Her pride has been trampled on by that evil girl! What do you say we go there and drag her out by her hair?!"

For a moment, Kai stared at his wife and the crying child like they were mad. His eyes blazed with fury and irritation. For a moment, he contemplated walking away, but when Celine yelled out his name one more time, he grunted and spun around.

"What?" He snapped, raising his voice at her for the first time in the six years that they were married. They had known each other for much longer but even then, he had never yelled at her once.

Celine’s breath caught and her hand instinctively jumped to her chest. Tears streaked down her face, dropping to her collar as she rasped;

"Did you just yell at me? Did you just yell at me because I asked you to go and discipline your unruly daughter?"

Kai rolled his eyes at her words. He hissed; "Are you stupid?"

Celine froze. Elara’s tears ceased. Her red-rimmed eyes shot up to look at Kai.

"Did you not hear what Elara said? She is now married to the Sovereign Alphas and you still want me to discipline her?"

"Yes!" Celine screamed, "She is your daughter and still a murderer!"

"Well, she is your daughter too!" He clapped back, his voice dripping with sarcasm and disdain. "Go and discipline her yourself... and make sure the Alphas see you while you’re at it since you’re so desperate to have yourself killed!" He said, and with that he turned on his heels and left, leaving everyone reeling in shock.

Nobody has ever seen Kai unravel like that before. No one has ever heard him raise his voice despite being the beta of their pack.

As he walked away, Celine couldn’t help but feel a strange shift in her chest. It almost felt like her ex-best friend was standing right in front of her— from heaven or hell, wherever the fuck she must’ve been all this time— laughing her head off until her silvery hair bounced around her oval face.

Her eyes watched Kai until he disappeared down a corridor and then she turned to Elara, "Did you really see Nyx’ara at the party?"

Elara nodded so hurriedly it made her neck hurt. "Yes. She was dressed so beautifully! Mom, I am sure that dress cost a fortune!"

Her eyes darted behind Celine to see that Tristan was still waiting, and with an eye roll, she hissed quietly; "Let’s go to my room."

Her mother, who quickly deduced that they had more to talk about, helped her to her feet, made a show of wiping the tears off her face, and led her away to her room with Tristan watching behind them.

It wasn’t until they had gotten in and heard the familiar click of the door behind them that Elara finally snapped out of character. She buried her face in her hands, screamed until her veins popped on the sides of her neck, and lifted her eyes to meet her mother’s.

"You should have seen her, Mom! She was beautiful. She stole the spotlight from me one more time! Hell, that should have been me!"

In panic, Celine clapped her hand over her daughter’s mouth to stop her from repeating that nonsense, but the girl, already heartbroken and angry, did not care one bit. She smacked her mom’s hand off, pressed her hand over her chest, and cried;

"I think they married her because they know she killed their sister! I didn’t kill the princess but I was there. I should have taken the blame and by now, I would have been their bride! Not her! Not Nyx’ara!"

Horror settled on Celine’s face as she watched her daughter crash out, and in that moment, for the first time since she became a mother, she did not know what to do.
