Chapter 40: A drunken surprise.
June 20 2026, 11:27am.
The word: ’former Alpha’ gave Nyx’ara some semblance of peace. It made her feel protected in the sense that she believed Flynn no longer had any power or leverage over her.
However, nothing about this ’peace’ made her loosen her grip on Kieran’s arms as she shook her head at him and hissed; "No-nothing."
"But that doesn’t look like nothing." He answered, gesturing at her face.
For a moment, she contemplated telling him the truth. She contemplated telling him about how he used to be her mate. How he had dumped her for her stepsister and how he’d thrown her into a dungeon to rot for three whole years despite knowing that she was innocent.
The words formed on her tongue but she struggled to get them out, so she decided to settle for something easy instead. "H-he was n-ot good to-to me." She said softly, a bit of emotion rushing into her voice.
Something about those words ticked Kieran off. Or maybe it was the slight tremor he had felt from her... the pain... the anguish that twisted at his guts, but he found himself subconsciously pulling Nyx’ara behind his back and stepping protectively in front of her before he even realised what he had done.
His face hardened when Flynn walked over with a smug smile spread across his face and a beautiful young woman perched on his arm like a trophy.
"Greetings, Alpha Kings... it is an honour to be invited to a ceremony as glamorous as this!" He greeted, bowing deeply even though his eyes were shining with greed and envy wrapped so tightly together one could not be distinguished from the other.
Nyx’ara kept her head bowed the entire time.
"And greetings, Supreme Luna, I am Alpha Flynn Ravenscroft... ruler of the Moonshine pack. This is my fiancée, Elara Nikolai."
As soon as Elara’s name was mentioned, she stepped forward, bowed shyly at the Alphas, and batted her lashes in the same way that used to make Flynn and Tristan swoon over her.
Her eyes, blue and greedy latched onto the Quad Alphas for a moment too long as if she was expecting them to notice her. To complement her...
They didn’t.
In truth, the four men were beautiful in every sense of the word. They were rich, manly and everything Flynn Ravenscroft, her fiancée was not and more. For a moment, she deluded herself into thinking that she could bag them like she did Flynn, however, the only problem now was the fact that they were married to the woman sandwiched between them.
At the thought, her eyes darted to the woman whose face was still slightly lowered. Her arm was looped between two of the Alphas in a way that made Elara’s stomach churn. Her dress was dazzling and looked like something that cost more than her house back at home; and in that moment, jealousy surged through her veins.
"Greetings, Luna."
That word made Nyx’ara flinch. It made her body boil with rage and disgust and everything else in between. She had once hoped that she could lower her head through it all but upon hearing that, she slowly lifted her head, met Elara’s confused-to-mortified gaze squarely, and hissed;
"Greetings Elara... and Alpha Flynn. Thank you for taking your time to grace my wedding on such short notice."
She had not stuttered. Goddess, she gave herself a mental pat on the back for sounding so fierce and so Luna-material. She gave herself an extra pat on the back when Elara stumbled backwards in surprise, almost falling until Flynn caught her.
A smile curved her lips when the expressions on Elara’s and Flynn’s faces went from smug to utterly shattered in a moment.
Elara was the first to recover. She hissed; "Nyx’ara?"
"She’s Luna Nyx’ara to you now," Draven sneered at Elara, aggressively hitting his staff against the floor.
The sound made Elara flinch in fear, especially as his Alpha aura pressed down on her.
These men were nothing like the men she had met and seen in her life. They were different. Darker. Scarier. Hotter. Goddess, their auras even felt more powerful than Flynn’s and his father’s put together, yet here they were getting married to Nyx’ara.
Never in her life had she imagined life to take such a turn. Never had she expected that the girl she made sure to send here to die would turn out to become Luna in less than a week.
Her eyes widened as they trailed down the length of Nyx’ara’s body, taking in the diamond tiara sitting on top of her silky silver hair, the elegant makeup on her face, the dress that cost more than her house, and her perfect perfect curves as the dress hugged her body like a second skin.
She gulped. "I cannot believe it is you." She said softly, and then turning to Alpha Draven, she lowered her head and continued; "...oh, Alpha, we are family! She is my stepsister..."
"And Flynn was my mate," Nyx’ara added, cutting Elara off.
For a split second, only silence echoed between them— a silence that was so charged and so thick, it could be cut through with a knife.
A flicker of recognition fleeted across Rhys’ face when he realized what this was. Elara was Nyx’ara’s sister, yet here she was being flaunted by Flynn, who also used to be Nyx’ara’s mate.
How shameless.
His eyes darkened and for a moment, all he felt was pity for the girl whom he had married about an hour ago or more. He wondered the kind of life she must’ve lived in the past... and most of all, wondered why she was slowly being poisoned at her former pack like the doctor, Jemima, had suggested.
His brothers, who all seemed to share the same thought, stepped forward protectively in front of Nyx’ara.
And Flynn, who noticed this, felt his jaw drop. He lifted his hand, pointed shakily at her, and was just about to say something until his eyes met Kieran’s and then darted to the black raven that had materialised out of nowhere and perched on his shoulder.
"I am very happy for you!" He hissed, even though deep down, he was stewing in rage and jealousy. "You look very... different."
Not starved. Not beaten to a pulp. Not dirty from being refused a bath for months.
"Thank you."
"I’d love to socialize now, if you will all excuse me..." he drawled, lowered his head in shame and defeat, and then literally began to drag Elara out of there.
However, he had just taken a step forward when Nyx’ara suddenly called out to him. She smiled and said; "Also, Alpha Flynn..."
He paused. Stopped and turned around.
He hated the way she referred to him so formally.
He hated how good she looked.
"Luna Nyx’ara?" He rasped, almost biting down on his tongue. "Is there a problem?"
"There is none," Nyx’ara answered softly, and in a lighter tone added; "I just want to say thank you for banishing me from your pack and sending me over here. You turned my life around with that simple ac-action."
Her voice cracked at the end of her sentence and her stutter returned, but in that moment, she didn’t give a damn about it. All she cared about was the way the color had left Flynn’s face...
—And the way he stumbled out of there like he was drunk on alcohol.
He too wished he was.
