BREAK THE LAW
They planned the assault on the Cathedral using Mirelle Aurel's sandwich paper. The Cathedral had three defensive rings.
The first was people.
Lucan solved that one by walking to the western service gate in full inquisitorial white and telling the guards he was conducting an emergency doctrinal review.
Technically true.
The second ring was a formation. Lysette solved it with the Crooked-Distance Shard, bending the gate's understanding of whether the group had crossed its threshold.
The shard cracked after use.
"How many uses left?" Aren asked.
"Maybe one," she said.
"You said it was Epic."
"Epic does not mean immortal."
Rhea nodded approvingly. "Good lesson."
The third ring was designed to stop exactly the sort of people who had survived the first two. Three Covenant Knights stepped from alcoves inside the lower nave.
Not templars.
Relic armor with dead cultivators' oath patterns preserved inside.
[ COVENANT KNIGHT ]
[Authority construct / High Resonant equivalent]
[Shared function: DAMAGE DISTRIBUTION]
Aren struck the first.
The wound appeared one-third as deep across all three.
"Linked health," Tavian said.
Nara looked at him. "Never call it that again."
"Accurate."
The Knights attacked as one.
Aren used Chosen Vector to enter the gap between two blades. Seris took the opposite side. Maelin held the third alone because Maelin apparently considered balance optional. Damage Distribution made ordinary focus fire useless.
Law Sight found the solution.
The shared relationship did not only divide damage.
It divided conditions.
"Nara! Poison one!"
"They are armor!"
"Then insult it chemically!"
She threw a bottle of binding solvent across the left Knight.
The armor slowed.
All three slowed.
Rhea attached redaction script to the second Knight's vision slit. All three lost half their target tracking. Tavian grabbed the third by the waist and lifted. All three staggered upward as the link tried to distribute position.
Lysette stared.
"That should not work."
"Administrative lifting!"
"I hate that it worked."
Aren and Seris struck simultaneously at opposite ends of the shared relationship.
The link overloaded.
All three Knights cracked.
[ELITE DEFENSE GROUP DEFEATED.]
[Origin acquired: 9.0]
[ORIGIN TOTAL: 70.2]
[Manifested spoil: COVENANT LINK - Rare]
The Covenant Link manifested after the three Knights broke.
It looked unimpressive.
Three black rings connected by silver thread.
The Codex described it differently.
[COVENANT LINK - Rare]
[Temporarily distributes one simple condition across up to three consenting targets.]
[Warning: damage distribution requires explicit acceptance and may be lethal.]
Tavian stared at the word consenting.
"The evil armor dropped an ethical version of its own ability."
Aren almost smiled.
"Apparently the Codex has opinions."
Nara took the rings.
"Do not use damage sharing."
"Agreed."
Lysette read the description over her shoulder.
"Simple condition could include location markers."
Rhea added, "Or concealment status." Seris looked toward the next Cathedral door.
"Can it share resistance?"
The Codex responded when Aren focused.
[Possible if resistance exists as transferable temporary condition.]
Nara held up the counter-binding mixture she had developed from the KNEEL-Shard.
Everyone looked at her.
She smiled.
"I have an idea."
Five minutes later, three rings sat on Aren, Seris, and Tavian. Nara painted one ring with the counter-binding compound.
The Covenant Link asked:
[DISTRIBUTE CONDITION: reduced susceptibility to low-grade command residue?]
YES / NO
All three had to accept.
They did.
A faint silver line connected them. The next command seal in the Cathedral struck all three at once.
KNEEL.
None did.
The rings cracked immediately.
One use.
Consumed.
But the command failed.
Tavian looked at the fragments.
"I liked that loot."
"It did its job," Aren said.
That was becoming his preferred definition of valuable. A chain of transparent gold formed between Aren's hands.
[May distribute one nonlethal physical or authority burden across consenting linked targets. Single encounter durability.]
Aren looked at the others.
Seris said, "Do not even think about using that to share your Refuge strain without asking."
Aren put it away.
"I was going to ask."
"Good."
He had not been.
That was why she was there. Aren thought this summarized the week well. Lysette drew the Cathedral foundation in charcoal. Rhea added margin routes in black ink. Lucan marked Church patrols from memory. Maelin drew one line straight through the center.
"That is not a plan," Seris said.
"It is the important part."
"The line goes through three walls."
"Walls are temporary."
Tavian nodded with great seriousness.
Nara said, "Do not encourage her." The sanctuary protected everyone inside, but the city beyond was deteriorating. The edict's secondary clauses had expanded. Guild halls refused service to anyone connected with Aren. Argent delegates found their Path access flickering. House Aurel guards could not obey orders that indirectly protected him. At the third bell, Lucan believed the First Witness would impose full sanction.
They had ninety minutes.
Aren pointed at the central dome on the map.
"Law Sight shows every edict thread converging here."
Lucan nodded reluctantly.
"The Covenant Heart. It translates divine instruction into local Mandate law."
"Can it be shut down?"
"No."
Maelin looked at him.
Lucan sighed.
"Not through authorized procedures."
"Better."
"I am beginning to understand why Darius liked you. I consider this a personal failure."
Rhea traced a route beneath the eastern transept.
"Margin path gets us under the Cathedral. From there, physical access."
"Who goes?" Caedmon asked.
Aren answered immediately.
"Me."
"Obviously," Seris said. "Continue."
"Seris, Maelin, Rhea, Lysette. Lucan if he chooses."
Tavian folded his arms.
"And me."
"You stay."
"No."
Aren looked at him.
Tavian's face was serious.
"I was useless when the Null Field hit Mount Ardent. I trained because I never wanted a system turning me off again. You are about to enter a building full of the system."
"That is why-"
"I choose."
The words stopped Aren.
First Principle.
Chosen relationship.
He did not get to celebrate choice only when people chose what he preferred.
Aren nodded.
"Fine."
Nara raised one hand.
"Also me."
"You are an alchemist."
"Which is why your plan currently contains no method for neutralizing the Covenant Heart's physical coolant, incense reservoirs, or defensive script ink."
Lucan stared.
"How do you know about the incense reservoirs?"
"Trade catalogues."
"Those are classified."
"Badly."
Everyone went.
Of course they did.
The margin route opened beneath the Cathedral twelve minutes later.
Lucan crossed last.
The moment he entered, his Church oath burned.
"Still coming?" Maelin asked.
"I am not helping Aren evade lawful authority."
Rhea smiled.
"What are you doing?"
"Preventing a divine sanction from injuring several million people due to an unresolved theological dispute."
You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit NovelPhoenix for the authentic version.
"Very different."
"Legally, I hope so."
They emerged inside the inverted cathedral. The statues remained dark after the Lawhound's death. At the far altar, a spiral stair led upward. They climbed into the living Cathedral. The first templar patrol found them in a relic corridor.
Lucan stepped forward.
"Emergency inspection."
The captain saluted.
"Inquisitor, the High Council ordered your detention."
Lucan closed his eyes.
"Of course they did."
Maelin struck the captain unconscious with the flat of her spear before anyone else reacted.
"Inspection complete."
They moved faster.
The Covenant Knights were not the Cathedral's worst defense. They were the defense designed to make attackers believe the worst was over. Aren learned this deeper inside the living Cathedral, when the next reliquary threshold began singing. No choir stood in the galleries.
The stone itself sang.
One note.
Then nine.
Every wound Aren carried reopened.
Tavian dropped to one knee.
Seris's shoulder began bleeding where the Chimera had grazed her days earlier. Maelin's old scars lit beneath her sleeves. Nara gasped and clutched her side.
The Codex opened.
[RETROACTIVE PENANCE ARRAY]
[Function: reasserts previously recorded injuries within Cathedral jurisdiction.]
[Warning: accumulated combat history increases severity.]
Tavian looked at Aren.
"The building remembers getting hurt?"
"It remembers us getting hurt."
"Worse."
Law Sight showed thousands of thin lines descending from the galleries into everyone inside.
Not current wounds.
Records of wounds.
The Cathedral had been cataloging damage since they entered.
Aren saw the trap immediately.
They had been rewarded for every fight leading here. Now the enemy was trying to turn their history into damage.
That felt personal.
Nara pulled out the KNEEL-Shard.
"This is coercive-law structure. Similar grammar."
Rhea looked at it.
"Can you scramble the record?"
"Maybe if I had an hour and a laboratory."
Tavian coughed blood.
"We have neither."
Aren reached for the Witness Ash.
Rare authority material.
Preserves the last question a divine instrument tried to answer. He had saved it since Mount Ardent.
The Codex analyzed the array.
[Retroactive Penance requires completed identification of injury-to-subject relationship.]
Identification.
Witness Ash.
Veil Thread.
Aren understood.
"Nara, bind the Ash to the KNEEL-Shard. Rhea, write a false subject boundary around us."
Rhea's mask snapped toward him.
"False how?"
"Make the Cathedral ask whether the injuries belong to the people it thinks they do."
Lysette grinned through pain.
"Uncertainty attack."
"Exactly."
They worked while the choir rose. Maelin stood in the center of the nave holding off two newly formed penance constructs with nothing but spear technique and spite. Seris joined her despite the blood soaking one sleeve. Tavian braced a collapsing column because the array had reopened a fracture in his shoulder and apparently he considered that an argument with architecture. Nara crushed the Witness Ash into powder over the KNEEL-Shard.
Black and gold fused.
Rhea wrote names around the group.
Not real names.
Roles.
Intruder.
Daughter.
Disciple.
Friend.
Witness.
Unwritten.
The array hesitated.
The Cathedral had injury records attached to individuals. Rhea had given it relationships instead.
Veil Thread spread from Aren.
Not enough to hide everyone.
Enough to make the final association expensive.
The choir missed a note.
Law Sight showed one of the descending threads detach from Seris.
Then Tavian.
Then Nara.
The Codex flashed.
[Identity resolution failure spreading.]
Aren drew Worldspine.
The array's central relationship appeared above the altar: CATHEDRAL RECORD -> SUBJECT HISTORY.
He struck.
Silver light cut through the line.
The choir stopped.
Every reopened wound became ordinary again.
Pain remained.
Damage did not.
The KNEEL-Shard shattered in Nara's hands.
Witness Ash burned away.
Two valuable rewards consumed.
The Codex displayed:
[RETROACTIVE PENANCE ARRAY DISABLED.]
[Materials consumed permanently.]
[Group survival probability increased substantially.]
Aren smiled.
That was enough.
Loot that survived forever was not useful. Loot that saved the people beside you was. Ahead, the path to the Covenant Heart opened. Lucan looked at the dead array.
"Those materials could have been studied for years."
Nara wiped blood from her mouth.
"We studied them quickly."
Then Maelin kicked open the next door.
"Move."
The Cathedral fought them.
Doors sealed.
Hallways redirected.
Commands appeared in gold script.
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
Aren walked through.
Seris followed after Lysette rewrote spatial permissions.
Tavian simply broke one door.
Nara dissolved another.
Rhea erased signs until three patrols became lost in their own monastery. At the central dome, resistance became serious.
Twenty templars waited.
Two Starheart bishops stood behind them. And Director Iven Sareth stood between both groups.
Aren stopped.
"You joined the Church?"
Sareth looked tired.
"Temporary alignment."
"Popular phrase this week."
"Aren, do not touch the Covenant Heart."
Behind him, a sphere of gold-white light floated above a circular pit.
Law Sight nearly blinded Aren.
Millions of threads.
Every registered relationship in Vhal Teren passed through the sphere. At its center burned one new command.
RETURN CLAIM.
"You know what the First Witness did," Aren said.
"Yes."
"It tried to own me."
"Yes."
"And you're defending it."
Sareth's jaw tightened.
"I am defending infrastructure. If you sever the wrong relationship, people die."
"Then help me sever the right one."
"You do not understand enough."
"Neither do you."
"I understand more than you."
"That is not the same thing."
Sareth looked at Worldspine.
"Give me the weapon. We can isolate the edict in a controlled environment."
Aren almost laughed.
"You tried to kidnap me two days ago."
"Recover."
"That word is doing heroic work."
Sareth raised one hand.
The templars moved.
Lucan stepped between them.
"Stand down."
The bishops stared.
"You are suspended," one said.
"Not yet. The High Council lacks quorum while Cardinal Voss is incapacitated."
"The divine edict supersedes council procedure."
Lucan looked at Aren.
Then back at the bishops.
"That sentence is the problem."
Aren looked past Sareth at the Covenant Heart.
"You really think nine survivors out of twelve proves this works?"
"No," Sareth said. "It proves it can work. Those are different statements."
"And the next twelve?"
"We improve the process."
"And the three after that who die while you improve it?"
Sareth's face tightened. "Do you think cultivation is bloodless? How many disciples die attempting Starheart? How many soldiers die because they never reach it? We tolerate risk when tradition blesses it and call it atrocity when a laboratory measures it." Aren hated that there was truth in the argument.
Nara spoke from behind him.
"Risk is not the issue. Information is. Reversibility is. Independent review. Whether the person offering the procedure also controls the data, the treatment, the compensation, and the definition of success."
Sareth looked at her.
Nara lifted one of her bottles. "I am an alchemist. We have ethics too. Mostly because our predecessors poisoned enough noble families that laws became fashionable."
Even Sareth almost smiled.
Aren said, "If you want my help later, open everything. Names. failures. methods. Let people who hate you review it."
"And if I agree?"
"Then later is still later."
Sareth shook his head. "You believe time belongs to you."
"No. I believe people do not belong to either of us."
For a heartbeat the director looked almost relieved.
Then the Covenant Heart pulsed.
The divine command brightened.
RETURN CLAIM.
Sareth's artificial closure flickered under the pressure. Aren saw fear cross his face.
The same fear Aren carried.
Two men afraid of gods, choosing different answers. Then the bishops ordered the templars forward.
Everything happened at once.
Nara threw the KNEEL-Shard onto the Cathedral floor.
The trapped command burst outward.
Not at the templars.
Against the edict architecture around them. For one second, two coercive laws recognized one another as competing instructions. Every golden restraint in the nave stuttered.
"That was your plan?" Tavian shouted.
"My plan was to learn what happens!"
"That is not a plan!"
"It is in alchemy!"
Lysette used the Crooked-Distance Shard at the same instant. Space around the Covenant Heart folded by less than an inch. That inch redirected three defensive beams into one another. Rhea threw the Null-Seal Core from Palimpsest into the resulting gap. The Heart's local suppression lattice went blind. Aren stared at all three of them.
"You kept every dangerous thing I gave you."
Nara looked offended. "Why would we throw away loot?" Aren had no answer to that.
Then Sareth attacked.
Maelin attacked the left bishop.
Seris met templars in gold fire.
Tavian became stone.
Nara's bottles broke across the floor in clouds of silver vapor that made Church script sputter. Lysette folded space until six templars ran directly into the wall they were defending.
Rhea vanished.
Aren used Hunter's Step.
Sareth intercepted him.
The director's hand struck Worldspine.
No Null Field.
No overwhelming cultivation.
His Mandate signature disappeared.
The Codex analyzed.
[ARTIFICIAL CLOSURE DETECTED.]
Aren stared.
Sareth smiled sadly.
"I told you Palimpsest continued."
He had done it to himself.
"How many?"
"Twelve volunteers."
"Survived?"
"Nine."
Aren's anger sharpened.
"And you call that success."
"Compared to zero? Yes."
Sareth moved.
Fast.
The director fought like a man who had studied other people's mistakes for decades.
He knew Hunter's Step.
He knew Unseen Thread.
He knew Aren preferred the spear's reach and protected his right side after the Glass March injury.
Palimpsest had profiles.
Sareth had read all of them.
His first three counters landed.
Palm to ribs.
Seal to shoulder.
A black mark across Aren's forearm labeled TARGET RESPONSE: REDIRECT.
"You made me a report," Aren said.
"You are the most important data set on Veyra."
"That may be the least romantic sentence anyone has ever said to me."
Sareth almost smiled.
Then Aren stopped fighting like the report.
No Hunter's Step.
No Unseen Thread.
Maelin's six hundred basic thrusts.
Advance.
Thrust.
Recover.
Sareth blocked the first.
Second.
Third.
On the fourth Aren deliberately repeated a pattern the director expected. Sareth moved to the predicted counter.
Chosen Vector triggered only then.
Aren accepted the palm strike, redirected after contact, and put the spear shaft behind Sareth's knee.
The director hit the floor.
"Data expires," Aren said.
Sareth rolled before Worldspine struck.
"Good data includes revision history."
Artificial closure made him partially immune to Cathedral command structures. He had built a crude version of what Elara created in Aren.
But crude was enough.
They fought beneath the Covenant Heart. Sareth used no weapon. His palms carried formation seals that tried to attach definitions to Aren.
SUBJECT.
ASSET.
UNREGISTERED PROPERTY.
Sovereign Resonance rejected them.
I choose what defines me.
Aren drove the spear shaft into Sareth's ribs. The director took the blow and caught the weapon.
"You could teach us."
"Maybe one day."
"People will die while you decide."
"People already died while you decided for them."
Aren twisted free.
Hunter's Step.
He crossed behind Sareth and struck the Covenant Heart.
Chosen Vector changed the movement.
Sareth had already read Aren's old pattern from Palimpsest surveillance. He turned to intercept the first direction. Aren accepted the risk instead of abandoning it. Hunter's Step carried him into Sareth's counterstrike. The director's palm hit his ribs.
Pain flashed.
The Imprint preserved the promised redirection.
Aren changed vector after contact.
He appeared inside Sareth's guard rather than behind him. Worldspine's shaft struck the director's sternum.
Sareth flew backward.
[CHOSEN VECTOR successful under live hostile prediction.]
[Technique proficiency increased.]
Sareth coughed and smiled despite the blood.
"Good. You are becoming harder to model."
"Stop saying things that make me want to hit you again."
"Scientifically difficult request."
Not physically.
The Cathedral kept one Covenant Knight out of the shared formation. Aren found it standing in front of the Covenant Heart. Unlike the three armor constructs outside, this one contained a person.
That changed everything.
The knight removed its helm.
A woman in her fifties looked back at them. Gray hair cut close. Scar from brow to jaw. Gold script covered half her neck.
Lucan stopped.
"Commander Vara."
She looked at him.
"Inquisitor."
No hatred.
Worse.
Respect.
The Codex opened.
[HUMAN CULTIVATOR]
[Realm: STARHEART]
[Mandate integration: extreme]
[Condition: VOLUNTARY COVENANT BURN]
Aren focused.
[Subject has voluntarily converted future cultivation potential into temporary authority output.]
[Estimated duration: 11 minutes.]
[Aftereffect: permanent realm damage probable.]
Seris whispered, "She's burning her Path."
Vara heard.
"The edict must hold."
Lucan stepped forward.
"The edict is coercive beyond doctrinal limit."
"The Witness issued it."
"The Witness can be wrong in application."
Pain crossed Vara's face.
"Do not make me hear that from you."
Lucan's staff lowered.
Aren understood.
This was not a monster.
Not an enemy built to drop a technique. It was someone spending her future because she believed obedience protected the world.
Killing her could be necessary.
It would not be rewarding.
The Codex did not display a boss panel.
Good.
Vara attacked.
Starheart pressure filled the nave.
Aren's knees bent.
Seris's gold Essence flared.
Maelin met the commander's spear first. The collision broke every remaining window.
Vara was stronger.
Maelin was better.
For three exchanges that difference kept everyone alive.
Then Vara's Covenant Burn increased.
Gold script spread across her face.
Her spear acquired a rule.
WOUNDS REMAIN OPEN.
The first cut across Maelin's arm refused to close. Nara's healing compound slid off it.
Aren opened Law Sight.
The wound relationship connected directly to Vara's burning Path. Every injury she created existed because she was sacrificing herself to keep it real.
"Don't trade damage with her!"
Tavian raised his hammer.
"Alternative?"
"Make her spend without hitting us."
Seris understood.
She attacked the spear.
Not Vara.
Every time Vara reinforced the weapon rule, Seris forced it against stone, pillars, broken armor—anything that made the authority maintain a wound relationship with something irrelevant.
Tavian joined.
He smashed a fallen pew into the spearpoint. WOUNDS REMAIN OPEN applied to wood. The pew developed a cut that refused to close.
Tavian looked at it.
"We have defeated furniture permanently."
Vara's jaw tightened.
She knew what they were doing.
She changed rule.
SUBJECTS CANNOT YIELD GROUND.
The nave hardened around everyone's feet.
Aren smiled despite the danger.
"Thank you."
Vara frowned.
Chosen Vector activated.
Aren selected forward.
The command prevented retreat, not advance. He crossed the distance faster than Vara expected.
Worldspine struck her spear shaft.
Not her body.
Silver light cut the rule.
Vara staggered.
Lucan moved behind her.
His staff touched the gold script on her neck.
"Vara. Enough."
She drove an elbow into his chest.
He did not defend.
The hit threw him across the nave.
"You swore the same oath," she said.
Lucan stood slowly.
"I did."
"Then obey it."
"I am trying to."
That stopped her more effectively than force.
Lucan approached again.
"The oath was to serve lawful witness. Not to make law whatever the Witness says in anger."
Vara's spear trembled.
The Covenant Burn continued eating her cultivation.
Aren saw the timer.
Eight minutes.
Seven fifty-nine.
"If you stop," he said, "can the burn be interrupted?"
The Codex answered.
[Possible if subject voluntarily withdraws covenant and external authority does not enforce completion.]
Vara laughed bitterly.
"Your relic thinks vows are buttons."
"No. It thinks choices matter."
"And what do you think?"
Aren lowered Worldspine.
"I think if I have to kill you, I will. I also think you shouldn't have to destroy your future to prove you meant an oath when you made it."
Silence.
The Covenant Heart pulsed behind her.
The edict tightened.
Vara looked at Lucan.
"If I release it, I am finished with the Church."
"Maybe."
"You too."
Lucan smiled without humor.
"I have had an educational week."
Vara closed her eyes.
The gold script stopped spreading.
Then dimmed.
Her Starheart pressure collapsed.
She fell.
Maelin caught her before she hit the floor.
The Codex displayed:
[Hostile encounter resolved without defeat Record.]
[No combat reward generated.]
Aren dismissed the panel immediately.
The reward was Vara breathing.
Lucan knelt beside her.
Behind them, the Covenant Heart waited.
The path was open.
Worldspine stopped inches from the sphere.
Law Sight opened fully.
Millions of relationships appeared.
Aren searched.
Not sect oath.
Not guild seal.
Not Path.
Not city covenant.
One line descended from far above. FIRST WITNESS -> COVENANT HEART -> EDICT.
Aren found the joint.
Sareth saw his eyes.
"Aren, wait!"
Darius's warning.
Do not challenge them because anger makes you feel brave.
Aren was not angry now.
He was terrified.
Good.
Fear was information.
He understood what he intended to cut.
One relationship.
Not the Mandate.
Not cultivation.
The right of this divine instruction to become local law.
Worldspine awakened.
Silver light extended from the broken point.
Aren thrust.
The line snapped.
The sky screamed.
[HEAVENLY LAW BROKEN.]
The Edict Splinter in Aren's pocket disintegrated. The tiny piece of divine law had remained connected to its source until the source relationship ceased to exist.
The Codex reacted.
The assault plan had raid roles even if no one called them that.
Seris commanded breach.
Tavian and Marek held heavy defense. Nara ran support and countermeasure supply.
Rhea handled route sabotage.
Lucan broke Church access.
Soren managed misdirection.
Maelin did whatever Maelin considered necessary, which no planning document successfully categorized. Aren took the core team toward the Executor. The Scartrace Compass mapped the Cathedral as a Grade IV authority scar.
[Active Depths: 4.]
[Break containment: 61%.]
[Core access requires disruption of three defense rings.]
The first ring was people.
They negotiated or bypassed where possible. The second was elite Covenant Knights.
Combat.
The third was architecture.
Harder.
Every doorway judged whether a traveler had standing to pass. The Jurisdiction Seal identified the claim chain. The Covenant Service Key opened maintenance access. The Redaction Needle found old emergency clauses.
Loot turned locks into choices.
At one gate, Seris stopped Aren from using Worldspine.
"Wait."
She pointed at a faded inscription.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION ACCESS SUPERSEDES CEREMONIAL RESTRICTION.
The Edict had covered half the text.
Rhea scraped away the overwrite.
The door opened.
No fight.
Aren looked at Seris.
"Efficient."
"I am learning from your worst habits."
The raid reached the inner Cathedral with most of its strength intact. That was the reward for not treating every obstacle as a boss. Then the Cathedral changed the rules.
The walls sealed.
The Executor descended.
The real boss room began.
Before entering the final defensive ring, Aren made everyone spend consumables they had been saving.
Nara distributed anti-law vials.
Seris installed the Claim Guard Strip.
Tavian seated the Titan Loadstone.
Rhea broke one charge on the Redaction Needle to expose emergency architecture. Aren used the final Mnemonic Salt. The white grains formed a line across the Cathedral threshold.
"This is the last one," he said.
Seris stepped across.
"Then make it useful."
The inner Cathedral tried to rewrite the entry route after they passed.
The salt held.
Their retreat path remained real.
Aren looked back once.
Rare consumable.
Gone.
Good.
If a dungeon could not make him spend anything he valued, it probably had not been dangerous enough.
[OBJECTIVE UPDATE: prevent replication of coercive closure method.]
[Heavenly coercion mechanism locally interrupted.]
[Reward escrow increased. Final resolution pending.]
Then every relationship in the Cathedral pulled the wrong direction at once. Aren had exactly enough time to think that breaking the law had been easier than surviving what came after.
[DOMINION UNLOCK CONDITION 2: COMPLETE.]
