Ash on his breath.
A girl beside him who was no longer just a girl.
And in front of them—blocking the path to the shrine—was something ancient.
Something wrong.
"Child of the forbidden name," the creature hissed, its voice layered with echoes, "you have spoken a Vessel's soul aloud. That is a sin not even the Throne may cleanse."

He just tilted his head and replied, "Then try."
