Fractures of Eternity

Chapter 86: A Goddess’s New Symptom

With the story of that god fresh in my mind, I could only wish this would all end well. Sadly, I had never felt this way before, and my desire to have Loki in my life was overwhelming, yet I wouldn’t allow him to drag me down. Nor would I bring him down.

Can I harden my heart? Or will I end up as deranged as the god, who destroyed the life cycle to mold it to his own liking?

Before he ever intervened, the souls could never get trapped in the mortal realm, which he fixed when he sent his daughter to clean up the mess he created, but then he went and killed her, too, breaking it all over again. However, Midnight didn’t stay down, as she moved her pieces from the soul cairn, which had become her new home after her father destroyed her.

Though her story aligns more closely with Rem’s than with mine, after all, she loved Fenrir with all her being—an affection that didn’t corrupt her. She was selfless until the end, which… makes me wonder if I can be like that too. At least… to Loki…

Even though I was the only god ever to come from the goddess of order and the god of chaos, I lacked the understanding of how to utilize this ability. They only used my power for others rather than myself, but back then, I didn’t have the will or the ability to speak my mind. I was stuck in a lifeless body, with an awareness no one could hear.

Nothing more than a thing people used. All without a care for what happened to me.

There was untapped potential within me, yet to reach it would place me in the crosshairs of the living gods.

Doesn’t change that I want to live a mortal life. There isn’t an ounce of me wishing to be something else. If I were… Then I would be able to be with Loki without worrying about all the little things!

According to Edna, no one could absorb the powers of my divine mother and father, as even half of it was too much to handle for the living gods; thus, they separated them into fractions among a court of certain gods. She lacked the knowledge of who had them, though, which meant we had to hope they would never come down to find us.

After all, the world is already screwed up enough as it is. Well, as they left it.

Rem was becoming a good balance between the world of the living and the dead, but there were many other aspects broken, which she couldn’t fix. Dad spoke about a time when Mom warned him that calamity was coming, though she refrained from saying what it was. The only thing she allowed him to know was that I was the key to stopping it.

If I wished, or so she said.

After the coliseum, we went to find Oswald, only to see that the castle was almost fully decorated. The workers were placing the finishing touches, but we could see the theme they were aiming for. All the pieces featured a white, black, and gold color scheme, and the dress code required everyone to wear extravagant masks, which screamed ball. When we found Oz and headed outside, we found even more stalls than the previous day, which made it almost overwhelming to see how many there were.

The king had arranged for all the commoners to come and play games, buy food, or purchase artifacts that the artists had made. However, they wouldn’t be allowed inside the castle, where all the royals and nobles would be, but at least they had a festival out here to enjoy.

This would make anyone think that Asher is a wonderful king. He’s also well-loved by his people, but why does he rule his family with an iron fist?Is he trying to prepare the boys for what the world expected of them? Or what he wanted?

As I drew closer to Alistair, I realized the king was desperate to bend the poor boy to his will, leaving me feeling like I had hit a dead end, while Loki and I were still going steady.

Well, hot and messy, more like it.

We filled our nights with one another, while in our mornings we went about our daily tasks. Luckily, no more craziness happened while I was with Loki, allowing me to breathe and enjoy my time with him more. Emma volunteered to help with the ball, mainly to avoid Oswald. The good turns didn’t stop the rumors about my relationship with the most sought-after prince from exploding.

Not that I care about their stupid glares.

Though I would never leave his sight for long, and if I was out of his sight, either Oswald or Alistair had to be around. Eli would also stay behind me, as I felt smothered, but in a good way. Even when we walked through the town, the snake had his watchful eyes on me the entire time, until we got to the Café. There, Ro was wonderful, like always, while Oswald was drinking his coffee when I suddenly felt faint as the world around me blurred.

Ever since the nightmare, more memories threatened to erupt from under the seal they were placed in, prompting me to cover my face with my hands. Instantly, my action was caught by my beloved vampire.

“Are you okay?” He asked, gripping onto my shoulder.

Suddenly, I found myself caught between the two boys’ gazes, while Zephier had miraculously been using me as a bed with Eli right under her.

“I’m fine, Loki. Just hungry, I guess.” I sighed before smiling at him politely.

Instinctively, he frowned, narrowing his eyes. “Why don’t I believe you?”

Hah… I don’t get how you always know I’m feeling off.

A second later, he placed his arm around my waist as I rolled my eyes at him.

“Sounds like your problem, hon,” I answered, snarkily.

My vampire smirked, but before he could answer, Oswald had had enough.

“Oi… keep your lover squabble behind closed doors.” He sipped his cup, prompting Zephier to get up and rub her face against his cheek.

Taking the chance to bother his twin brother, Loki turned his attention to the grumps.

“Ozzy, just because your relationship went up in fire. That doesn’t mean I have to tone it down.” He stuck his tongue out.

His words caused Oswald to frown, placing his cup on the table, yet before a bicker could ensue, I couldn’t keep my lid down.

“Why are you such an annoying thing to deal with?” I mumbled, eyes twitching.

Nothing about this vampire ever allowed me to get a clear head, as he made everything much worse than it was.

Leaning into my ear, he would make me eat my words. “Oh, sweetie, you love me in bed, though.” Loki teased, gripping me tighter around my waist.

Unlike me, he no longer cared who heard him; no, he flourished when he saw my cheeks burn red at his command. In an instant, I forgot those messy memories as my mind filled with him alone.

“You know what? Alistair was right. You’re such a bore even in bed!” I snapped, gazing towards Oswald, who had a smirk on his lips.

“Argh… Vivi, why can’t you be sweet to me?” My vampire sighed.

Ignoring him, I directed myself towards the less crazy twin, who was taking a sip of his coffee while studying us.

My only way out.
